••• Reid camp in near-panic as Angle hits 50% in Rasmussen poll •••

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1010/43325.html

The Reid camp is saying 3 troubling new polls are not accurate but the news sure isn't great.

I haven't a clue how Reid pulls this out at this point. He has thrown the kitchen sink at Angle, all sane people see that she is a nut, but Nevada is full of people who are not sane.

Here's a new ad, apparently a web ad, for Reid, with comedian Rita Rudner narrating:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS8kRMGKOpM&feature=player_embedded

It refers to the fact that Angle tried to get 3rd party Scott Ashjian out of the race by offering him "juice" - a bribe - with influence with Republicans on Capitol Hill. But nothing seems to matter. Nothing sticks. Add on that Angle has a built in advantage in that her followers are fanatics who will rush to the polls in greater numbers and Reid looks like toast.

This is a truly shocking state of affairs when you consider that Reid has run an avalanche of ads skinning Angle alive. See here:

••• Over FIFTY videos: Reid ads rip Angle: Why is this F*CKING SHE-NAZI still standing? •••

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x9244149

What is the matter with Nevadans?

I think we are looking at the turning point, the death knell for the Reid campaign. Angle is pulling into the lead. Nothing seems to stop her. Nevada could be the most reactionary state in the union right now, eclipsing some of the worst states in the South.

Angle won't get anywhere close to 50%, because a lot of people who don't like Reid will just make "None of These Candidates", rather than vote for a nutcase. Rasmussen has her higher than any other poll.

7. Angle In Flap As Pastor Calls Reid's Mormon Religion A Murderous Cult
Holy Jeremiah Wright, Batman! In the Nevada Senate race, Republican nominee Sharron Angle is now having to put some distance between herself and her own former pastor, John Reed of Sonrise Church in Reno, after Reed attacked Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's Mormon religion.

In an interview with the Reno News & Review, Pastor Reed attacked Harry Reid, making some rather inflammatory comments regarding the Latter-Day Saints Church being a "cult" -- and alleging conspiracies involving big business and secret murders:

"The Christian community--all the Christians, theologians and scholars, all recognize that, that Mormonism is a cult. I have books in my library on cults, and it lists Mormonism right there with all these bizarre cults. Well, there must be a reason. I mean, here a member of a cult is one of the most powerful people in the United States. Doesn't that alarm you? And his allegiance is to Salt Lake City.

19. Or Will They Vote For Angle Anyway?
Edited on Fri Oct-08-10 01:18 PM by Vogon_Glory
Or will conservative Nevada LDS'ers vote for Angle anyway, despite the fact she's associated herself with a pastor who has gone out of his way to attack the very foundations of their faith.

The mindset of present-day Republican voters continues to surprise me. They'll vote for ANY right-wing whack job who will attack their faith, their patriotism, their values, but as long as he or she displays their R/W/B Republican campaign button and waves the flag, they'll give him or her their vote.

Nineteenth century LDS'ers were anything BUT liberals, but they had better sense. THEY wouldn't have stood for that, and would have denied that politician their votes.

At the very least.

It looks like Nevada Mormons might well fall into line behind someone who might well attack their church without so much as making a peep of protest. On the other hand, let the Democratic candidate do so much as attend a church where a lowly usher even mildly disagrees with some incumbent Republican politico, they'll immediately conclude that not only is the usher a traitor, but so is anyone who attends that church or anyone even tangentially connected to that church's congregation.

:argh:

21. Mormons are VERY sensitive to anything that smacks of persecution.
Just look at any threads on DU critical of the LDS church and you'll see there's a Mormon Defender Brigade that tends to come out to fight on those threads and call people "haters".

Those who hear about this, most will vote against Angle.

39. Ahh, But Then Again I'm Talking About CONSERVATIVE LDS'ers
I have not really kept up with the threads concerning the Latter Day Saints on DU. But it doesn't surprise me that the sorts of LDS'ers who would post on DU would be very sensitive to persecution. Most non-reactionaries have their thinking caps AT LEAST set to 'pilot light on' (Some have their thinking caps set to 'High') and probably have at least some notion of what the Mormons went through in the 19th century and are aware of the continuing Fundamentalist/Evangelical Protestant campaigns against them.

But do politically-conservative LDS'ers have the same sort of awareness and reaction when their church is being badmouthed as those politically progressive LDS'ers who post on DU?

I wonder. I do wonder.

Will those politically-conservative LDS'ers STILL fall behind Sharon Angle anyway, or will they express their displeasure at the polls either by voting for Harry Reid or even just leave the space on their ballots for Senator blank?

Then he deserves to lose. Angle is a complete nutcase, and if Harry can't hammer that one home to the voters, then his skills as a politician are so weak that he's no good in the Senate to begin with.

79. I agree, how in the hell did Reid ever win any election???
Reid is completely incompetent as a senator, as a senate leader and in every other way. What in the hell is wrong with Nevada voters? Are they all imbeciles? If Reid and Angle the two best candidates in the state the people there must be a damned mutant colony of subhumanoid creatures without brains. I don't get how Reid ever won any election. I wouldn't hire him to mow my lawn, let alone vote for him as my senator.

We need to change our system and purge all of the money that is corrupting campaigns. The only way to get competent people elected to represent us is to stop allowing our elections to be bought by the richest people. I'm willing to bet every person in my neighborhood is infinitely more competent than either Reid or Angle.

It doesnt take intelligence, wisdom or even sanity to run for office as long as you whore yourself out to the highest corporate bidder. We don't have an electoral process, we have a goddamned circus full of freaks, and that includes Reid.

Top Nevada GOP lawmaker endorses Reid

By MARTIN GRIFFITH,
Associated Press
Oct 7

RENO, Nev. – Veteran state Sen. Bill Raggio, one of Nevada's most influential Republicans over the last four decades, says he's reluctantly endorsing Democratic U.S. Sen. Harry Reid's re-election campaign.

Raggio issued a statement Thursday sharply criticizing GOP candidate Sharron Angle, branding her as a "totally ineffective" four-term state lawmaker.

Raggio also cited what he called Angle's inability and unwillingness to work with others even within her own party, and her extreme positions on Social Security and other issues.

Raggio also criticized Angle for badmouthing GOP leaders in a recent secretly taped conversation.

The Angle campaign did not immediately respond to Raggio's comments.

Raggio defeated Angle two years ago in a bitter GOP primary.

So the choice is between someone a majority of the people seem to detest, and someone a majority of the people think is batshit insane.

At the moment, folks appear to favor batshit insane over someone they can't stand.

The polls in this race are going to bounce around quite a lot before November, but there is no doubt that Reid is in a lot of trouble.

If Reid had conducted himself in a manner that would indicate independent thought and political courage, I can guarantee you that he would be doing better. Instead his career, so far, has been one of milquetoast political action and capitulation to special interests and Repuke bullying.

Sadly, not many respect the victim of bullying, but respect is to be found in droves for those who stand up to the bully (regardless of whether the outcome was positive for the victim or not).

When are Dems going to get this simple "truism" of life and politics? Alan Grayson does and look how well he's doing in central FL.

I am impressed by your level of concern concerning a race which is a concern to everyone.

50. Take a deep breath. You get more hysterical than a Politico headline.
I wonder what your intentions were. (not that I care about Reid, but this race is exactly where it has been for the last two months. Deadlocked. Not good for Reid, but no need to overreact either).

51. Nevada has been hit super hard by the recession. The public has gone nuts
Angle offers nothing but a "tough love"/Herbert Hoover approach as an answer to these problems. The public doesn't understand what is going on or what is at stake here.

60. For your information it was I who coined the term "fear monger" in the 1992 Clinton campaign.

Which was used effectively to undermine the smears Bush was using.

The real problem is not panic or no-panic, but thinking that if we all take Prozac and go to positive thinking seminars that the election will magically be won by our side.

A big part of the problem is that we are not nationalizing the election on our side. The GOP says Republicans better vote because Obama stinks but our side does not NATIONALLY say that the GOP stinks. We are running campaigns locally, that has been announced by our party leadership. You know what that means? Every man for himself. We are not showcasing the worst of the Republicans in national TV ads as poster children for all that is wrong with the GOP.

This is why so many on our side are in trouble. There are a few exceptions and a few have pulled it out but so many others are in deep trouble and unable to get above the GOP NARRATIVE against us. We don't spread our own narrative against them and that is a big part of why we are losing so many races. Just look at Alaska. Astounding that Miller could be winning when he is against all the Federal aid Alaska needs and rakes in.

They have seized on the weak economy and say it is all our fault but we have no national TV ads to get above the right wing noise machine and are just hiding under the desk while they scream that it's all our fault. This is why so many Democrats are being hammered.

** DALLAS - Former President Gerald Ford, a well-paid point man for the Reagan-Bush campaign, Tuesday peppered Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale as a pie-in-the-sky fear monger.

The Democrats'1984 campaign theme, Ford told an enthusiastic GOP National Convention, seems 'to be that America's future belongs to the wishers, the wasters, the wanters, the whiners and the weak.

But I say America's future belongs to the same

Too funny.

80. The RNC recently flooded the airwaves and the Koch Bros. money is apparently unending
The reason Angle is doing so well? Kelo , plain and simple. There are libertarian "think tanks" based here that have paid Internet trolls -- one of them even gave interviewsd for the local paper. That same paper is not only the source of the DU lawsuit, it's nothing but a frothing hyper-partisan machine, and the largest paper in the state. But mostly it goes back to Kelo.

This country is fucked; most days I'm not sure if we can ever recover from the damage Bush did.

http://www.thecypresstimes.com/article/News/National_News/NEW_POLL_SHOWS_SHARRON_ANGLE_LEADING_HARRY_REID/34595

There are only so many of these polls showing Angle ahead before you have to conclude:

She's ahead.

Add on her advantage in that her supporters are fanatics determined to vote and all the whining and shooting the messenger won't change the fact that Reid is in trouble.
