Republicans scary immigrant photo depicts Mexicans in Mexico, photographer reveals

A photograph that has appeared in two high-profile Republican campaign commercials, used in both cases to depict what some have called "scary" illegal immigrants, is actually a photo taken in Mexico, depicting three Mexican farmers whose crops were destroyed, a British photo journalist has revealed.

And he isn't exactly happy to see his work reproduced in such a manner.

The photo, which was available through Getty Images, carries a caption describing the men as "Mexican citizens photographed in their own country," explained photographer Chris Floyd, in an update to his blog.

In spite of this, Republicans Sharon Angle, a Senate candidate from Nevada, and Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) have both featured the image in advertisements castigating alleged support of illegal immigrants by their political opponents.

2. Not bad enough these guys lost their crops
Then they get to be exploited by the racist xenophobes in the United States. Stay classy, Sharron, David and all of you in the Republican party.

11. Yeah - they don't look scary to me - just serious
Their expressions and body language are not threatening or aggressive, so what's supposed to be scary? If I passed them on the street I'd probably just smile and maybe say "hello" depending on the circumstances.

25. Nope
the photog sold the rights to the photos to a 'stock photo' site. Anyone can go to a stock photo site and for a fairly small amount of money buy the right to use photos of anything, for anything..so no, the photog doesn't have a cause for action.

Fact is, true pro photogs believe that people who sell their pics in this manner are spoilers.

28. Too bad then, the photographer can't gripe on how it was used if he sold the rights but...
I am glad he has gone public with the truth about the pic.

7. Wait, if you're Canadian, I'm not sure I like the "we should tax all foreigners living abroad."
"We" (Canadians?) should tax all foreigners (including Americans?) living abroad (is the US "abroad"?). It sounded like a good idea until I started thinking about who the "we" and who the "them" are.

Assuming this is in good fun, I would add a suggestion that all countries should be able to tax all foreigners living abroad because they are taking jobs meant for the first country's companies. Nationalism seems to be running fairly high these days. This way politicians would be able to proclaim that they were really sticking it to the foreigners (who are the cause of all problems) rather than taxing citizens. That sounds like a vote-getter to me.

There would be the "small" problem that each of us would then be paying taxes to 200 other national governments (which view us as foreigners), but that would just make us even madder at other countries so that we would raise taxes on foreigners even more.
:)

8. But think about how much money we could raise
by taxing the rest of the world. There's a hefty chunk of change to be made in China and India ;)

Edited on Mon Oct-11-10 05:25 AM by Hannah Bell
the one thing that makes me a little suspicious is that mexican farmers don't typically wear backwards ball caps.

http://www.gettyimages.com/Search/Search.aspx?contractUrl=2&language=en-US&assetType=image&p=%22mexican%20farmers%22#2

i mean, did anyone really think it was a picture of three "illegal aliens" in the first place? like they asked everyone == are you illegal so we can take your picture?

i figured it was actors, the point isn't who the people in the photo *really* are, the point is the race-baiting xenophobic ad.

17. OK, so they are "potential" illegal immigrants...who knows, they could be in
your back yard right now.
Or they could be in their own back yards, down in Mexico, I don't know....

Republicans will lie about anything and everything, even for no reason but to be doing it.

Wasn't Satan called the "Father of Lies"? I guess Angle and Vitter are just cousins...

21. Doesn't Matter...The Lies Work...
They operate under the "rule" that a lie runs around the world before the truth puts its pants on. With a complicit corporate media that seems to only "fact-check" when it can make a Democrat look bad these lies are seen by millions before anyone dares to stand up to call it for the bullshit it is. By then it's been mission accomplished...minorities demonized, politicians smeared and the lies perpetuated.
