It was a plan hatched by a group of teens gathered outside a northwest Omaha apartment, a familiar spot where the teens would hang out and smoke cigarettes. A spot not far from the sidewalk and grass that soon would be soaked with Christopher Taylor's blood.
But something went wrong with the plan. Instead of making $100 robbing a pizza delivery man, one of the plotters, 16-year-old Bryton A. Gibbs, “blacked out or went crazy.” He shut off the lights in a vacant apartment, pulled out a knife with an 8-inch blade and stabbed Taylor twice, at least once through the back.

That was one of the key details relayed in testimony Tuesday morning by William Rinn, a Douglas County sheriff's investigator, during a hearing where evidence was presented against Gibbs and co-defendant Dontavis C. McClain, 19.
After the hearing, the pair were ordered to stand trial, each on charges of first-degree murder, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony and conspiracy in connection with the Sept. 10 slaying of Taylor, 33.
Through much of the hearing, Taylor's father and stepmother locked their eyes on Gibbs and McClain. But as details of the slaying came out, Taylor's parents closed their eyes. His father kept his head down.
Rinn said McClain told investigators he had been with Gibbs inside an apartment at 6608 N. 89th Court — near Sorensen Parkway and Ida Street — that had been vacant about a month. After Gibbs “went crazy,” a wounded Taylor fell into McClain, the investigator said, and McClain went through the victim's pockets and took what money he could.
