Lighting Strikes the Statue of Liberty
I'm sure that some teahadist will claim that it's a "sign from God" or something.

6. I think that's lightening striking the Port of Bayonne, New Jersey, behind Lady Liberty.
What did Bayonne ever do to deserve THAT?

:hi:

8. It happens all the time...
Lady Liberty is thought to be hit by about 600 bolts of lightning every year.

The photojournalist waited 40 years and braved a 2 hour storm for the shot...awesome! Once in a lifetime.

20. The statue is covered with a skin of copper.
Edited on Thu Oct-14-10 04:39 PM by karynnj
Years ago when the statue was renovated, they needed copper that had been exposed to the elements for roughly the same amount of time. A copper roof at AT&T Bell Labs' Murray Hill headquarters had copper that matched - so the BL roof was replaced so the original roof could be used for the Statue of Liberty renovation.

I would bet that the Statue which is the highest point in its immediate vicinity has been hit before.
