The Media's Craze for Christine O'Donnell

Chris Cillizza notes that Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell (R) has received star treatment in the media, even getting the chance to debate opponent Chris Coons (D) tonight on national TV. But he suggests the Delaware Senate race may not warrant all the media focus that it has received.

"Judging from that treatment, a casual viewer might conclude that the race for Vice President Joe Biden's old seat is among the most competitive in the country. That, of course, would be wrong. Way wrong."

"She is a decided long shot to even come close to being competitive in Delaware, and there are at least 15 Senate races that are closer, according to public polling, at the moment. Covering her is one thing. Covering her as though her race will decide the fate of the Senate is quite another."

1. She is toast, was toast. Never wasn't toast.
Every pixel and dollar spent defeating her on our part, every second of coverage she receives on the media's part, is better employed against Toomey, Johnson, Paul, MacMahon, Coats, Ayotte, Portman... a hundred House candidates

She's not a threat -- she's a distraction.

She's a Judas goat for the media. And she's a short trip from DC or NY, so easy to cover -- almost an amazing coincidence

More bright shiny things offered to us secure in the knowledge that we'll chase them.

2. I was so happy when I surfed back to CNN to see that
they had left the debate and gone back to watching the miners in Chile. Making the Delaware race by the media more important because of O'Donnell disgusted me.

6. how many puke losers can FOX employ? They have Rove, Huckabee, Palin
not to mention people like Oliver North.

Unless Sarah is leaving to run in 2012 and Chrissy takes her spot I don't know WTF they would do with her.

9. Think of it as a GOP welfare program for people they like, but are otherwise unemployable.

7. Everyone loves to watch a train wreck
Okay, maybe most people have the decorum not to admit it, but there it is. They are covering her because she's a pretty whack job. Same reason the Palin clan still gets coverage.

8. This is what I wrote last night. CNN billed the debate as "The Showdown"!!
What showdown??!?!?! That would make it appear as though there is a contest. This woman is losing huge. It really bothers me, too.

All the talk and hoopla about how Barack Obama had no experience and therefore wasn't qualified for office.

And yet, here is this woman--clearly unqualified--and clearly out of her league. She has no substance, knows no policy. The bar is set so low for her that as long as she doesn't sneeze, she's a shoe-in for the Senate.

12. it's all part of the Palin phenomenon....
In the eyes of the media and its viewers, sane, well-reasoned, non-screechy political candidates are BORING!!!

The more outrageous, extreme, happily ignorant, irrational and LOUD a candidate is, the better... Even the ones who aren't running for office -- Palin-esque candidates are cornering all the airtime, interviews, book offers, public appearances, speeches, etc...

13. The "coverage" of the debate on CNN this morning was pathetic - I watched it last night and
it was negligent and criminal the way they were talking about Christine O'Donnell "really taking off the gloves" last night. She was ridiculous - she couldn't even cite ONE recent Supreme Court decision she disagreed with. ONE!

And Kiran Chetry at the debate site saying "I'm here at the site of last night's debate between Tea Party favorite Christine O'Donnell and also her opponent Democrat Chris Coons as well" - what the hell is that? The debate was between Republican Christin O'Donnell and Democrat Chris Coons, end of story.

The "liberal media" myth is a joke.

14. She's so spectacularly unqualified for public service
that we can't take our eyes off her.

The media is going to hover over a U.S. Senate candidate who is drawn to fundamentalist Christianity in part over a love for meatballs, and who opposes masturbation, and who claims scientists have developed mice with human brains. And not least, the Chinese could invade at any moment.

The Salvador Dali Museum may have to close, as they can't compete with that much surrealism.

the next political celebrity a la Sarah Palin and the media will be hanging on her every word, tweet, and Facebook posting. You can count on it. :eyes:
