1. Not for me to accept of refuse her apology, but how do you misspeak on an issue like that.
Edited on Thu Oct-14-10 12:42 PM by Mass
How do you think that homosexuality is not a choice and end up saying it is a lifechoice?

Not saying she is not supportive of gay rights, but it has always been difficult for me to understand how you misspeak on such an issue.

4. Unbelievable.
I will never apologize for standing up for democratic values or expecting elected democrats to behave like...democrats.

7. When they fall out of line with mainstream democratic values...
they deserved to be called on it. I voted for democrats the last election and plan to do so again, but that does not mean that we don't get to criticize them when they mess up.

12. She apologized..
just what in the hell do you want? With the election only about 3 weeks away, we have umpteen threads bashing a member of the Obama Administration. The bigger picture needs to be looked at here..

21. We hate it when Republicans issue that same non-apology apology.
When one of our own does it, well, that's different.

18. Great point.
Even my kids don't get by with lame excuses like that. Why should we expect so little from our elected officials and their people??

24. Apologies are nice but 'fixing it' takes some effort.
It was a completely stupid, thoughtless and callous thing to say.

She has three weeks to work on 'fixing it' so she better get going and if she does that it will do a hell of a lot more for the bigger Obama picture than simply ignoring or 'moving forward and away' from her remarks.

11. Wrong. I wouldn't take that fake apology from my kid, and I love him.
I love and respect this administration, but I won't take it from them, either.

14. Hey, another DU mind reader! Man, we're blessed with psychics here.
There comes a point where reasonable individuals turn their attention to the pattern of "misspoken words" from a single source, and begin to draw conclusions based on those patterns.

6. Republican-style apologies don't impress me much.
"I apologize to those were offended...blah-blah-blah."

As if lifted directly from the Carl Paladino playbook!

8. No, she needs to go further and discuss how viewing sexuality as a "lifestyle choice"...
...is a perfect example of the homophobia behind the bullying.

She needs to show me she understands how dangerous those words are.

Talk is cheap. Equality is a clear-cut issue & it's long past time to act.

10. If I wouldn't accept it from my own kid, why should I accept it from a leader
who should set an example?

"...to anyone who may have taken offense..." I don't call that an apology whatsoever.

16. Of course, those accepting probably have no standing to do so
Same people who defended Donnie McClurkin declaring war against the gay community, calling us killers and vampires. Nothing new.
There is much a woman like Jarrett could do to make actual penance. These faith folk never seem to think about that. So self serving, so shallow.

Um, it's really not their place to accept it or not.

17. She doesn't need to apologize. If she misspoke she just needs to say that.
You only need to apologize if you purposefully try to hurt someone's feelings. It sounds like she misspoke so no apology needed, just a correction.

22. It is not Valerie Jarrett who needs to apologize. It is the Obama Administration.
There are lots of clueless but well-meaning people in the world. I get that her concern was sincerely meant, and that she in all probability doesn't actually think that sexual orientation is a "lifestyle choice." What is bizarre and inexcusable is the fact that a senior advisor to the Obama Administration, a senior advisor who was sent to speak to the Human Rights Campaign, is so clueless about proper language when it comes to sexual orientation that, in the context of talking about teenage suicides (!), she would use a term like "lifestyle choice."

29. Accepting that apology makes no sense
The big problem with what she said wasn't that it offended some people.

The problem is that it was a false and stupid and parroting a RW theme.

If she said that evolution is a myth I wouldn't be looking for an apology.

I would, however, have learned something about her.
