After O’Reilly’s Rants About How ‘Muslims Killed Us On 9/11!’ Goldberg And Behar Storm Off Set

This morning, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly appeared on The View and chatted with the hosts about a variety of the day’s issues. At one point, the discussion turned to the topic of Park 51, the Islamic community center that is being planned to be built two blocks from ground zero in New York City.

O’Reilly proclaimed his strong opposition to building the community center, and the hosts began to press him on his position. Goldberg asked him why he and other Park 51 opponents are so against building the institution. O’Reilly responded by saying it was “inappropriate.” Goldberg then asked the Fox News host why he thought it was inappropriate, and he responded, “Muslims killed us on 9/11!” Goldberg responded by saying, “Oh my God!” and then used expletives censored by the station. O’Reilly continued to repeat his phrase, and co-host Joy Behar proclaimed, “I don’t want to sit here,” and got up and left. She was soon joined by Goldberg, who walked off the stage as the crowd cheered:

O’REILLY: Muslims killed us on 9/11!

GOLDBERG: Oh my God! That is so (expletive)

O’REILLY: Muslims didn’t kill us on 9/11? (crosstalk)

GOLDBERG: What religion was Mr. McVeigh?

O’REILLY: Muslims killed us on 9/11!

BEHAR: I don’t want to sit here.

1. Thanks for putting up the transcripts
I saw another thread in the video section, and I couldn't bring myself to watch it. I can't stomach O'Reilly or his putrid spew. You saved me from having to sit through all of it to see the walk-off. I'm sure KO will be covering it tonight, as it is.

2. Talk about an incoherent exchange
I have to side with Babs here. I think she's right. Why leave the set of your own show? Reminded me of Charleton Heston getting up and leaving the interview with Michael Moore even though the interview was being conducted in Heston's own house. Of course, O'Reilly doesn't have much room to talk since he hung up on Terry Gross only minutes into his Fresh Air interview in 2003.

8. I guess I just don't see why this is such a big deal
Rather than get all worked up, I would give the same calm response to opponents of Park 51 as I would to opponents of a Qu'ran burning. 'Sorry if your feelings are hurt, but tough shit -- this is how we get down in Amurrica. It's called religious freedom, folks.'

5. What is the alternative. Stay, and dignify his bs? Ask him to leave?
What if someone visiting your home starting spewing stuff you had no desire to hear?

11. He's been on the View tons of times
and he frequently gets into it with Whoopi and Behar. They know full well what he's all about and he knows what kind of reception he'll get, yet both parties keep doing it (though I don't know how much say they have in the choice of guests). It's all a big dance, IMO. I'm not the kind of person that gets too upset if someone is disagreeing with me. It would take a lot more than opposition to Park 51 to get kicked out of my place :) If somebody's saying something I disagree with, I'd rather spend my energy refuting them with facts and snappy witticisms than get my blood pressure up.

What O'Reilly did is worse than saying something that some don't agree with. OMG!!! If you can't see that, then.................oh well. He disparged a whole religion. YIKES x(

15. Whole religions are routinely disparaged
as is the entire concept of religion, including here at DU. While I don't agree with him, I don't see it as the end of the world either.

13. True,

It would have been better if they had both picked O'Reilly up and tossed him off the set. I would have paid to see that.

But, if they couldn't do that, I think walking off themselves made sense.

10. And sadly, O'Reilly is now one of the most rational people on Fox "News"
Excuse me, I just threw up in my mouth a little. Ugh.

O'Reilly is an expert at logical-fallacy debating. His positions are designed to enrage and create emotional reactions. They don't look to reason or logic for their persuasive power, and he will never concede on those points.

They played into his hands by storming off - the Fox narrative of "liberals are emotional, they're afraid to debate the facts, they run away when faced with my might blowhard powers" gets a booster shot. Better to have asked why these muslims should suffer for the crimes of a handful of other muslims. But the mental calm that would take is not what TV like Fox or The View is about. It's about yelling.

Whoopie and Joy should have prepped by taking a week-long Vipassana retreat and 4 hours of yoga immediately preceding the taping.

16. No, O'Liely, Muslim EXTREMISTS killed Americans on 9/11.
We'd never say that Christians bombed the Atlanta Olympics park and Oklahoma City federal building. Christian EXTREMISTS. Get it? O'Reilly just did another language sneak-around to stir up hate among his Fox Ewes fans.

19. Actually, we really don't know THAT, either.
Without a thorough, objective investigation, it's all speculation.

probably suspended and/or fined for unprofessional conduct.
