There's no shoulder, so I park in his driveway. I dislike doing this,
but my only other option right here is to park 500 yards up the road and lose fifteen minutes trudging to the house and back. Instead, I just try not to block the drive completely and try to keep the car as close as possible to the road, where I hope the drive passes over common right-of-way. He might not like that anyway, and I'm ready to offer a quick apology and skeedaddle

He's visibly working in his garage as I get out and walk up the gravel towards the house

When I think I've reached the proper distance from which to hail him, I call out: I'm so-and-so. I'm a volunteer for the Democratic Party. I'm looking for so-and-so

He comes out of the garage towards me: Your car's gonna get hit there. You really ought to get it out of the road

It doesn't look to be out of the road from where we're standing. But I tell him it's a small car, very slightly out of the traffic lane

I learn that he'll vote and he'll vote Dem, so I offer him an early voting schedule

Can I have a few extra copies of that? he asks. I'd like to give it to a few people

I hand him five or six

1. Waiting for the rest of the story, or is that all?
What state by the way?

5. LOL! You were maybe expecting the Saga of Beowulf? A typical voter contact
for me takes something between 30 and 90 seconds; so in my canvassing stories, plot and character development will always be rather limited -- though I can promise some unity in space and time!

When's the last time you asked a stranger who came to your house whether the person had parked safely?

6. I think it was the last phrase left floating with not so much as a period to anchor it
that made me think you hit "post message" prematurely, lol.

The strangers who canvass around here sometimes use our driveway to park because it opens onto two streets, and there's usually plenty of room for an extra car. There are also a lot of side streets with safe on-street parking available.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your story. :hi:
