Statue of Liberty hit by lightning - incredible picture captures the moment

This is the moment the Statue of Liberty was hit by lightning - and caught on camera by a photographer who waited two hours in a storm-hit New York City.

2. I don't believe the statue itself was hit.
Right below the statue...that little set of "windows"....

there's a flash of light there that looks like the lightning bolt may have struck to the side and below the statue...maybe on the water or on the ground.

But it's a cool photo anyway.

3. There is something "not right" with that photo of a lightening strike.
To me, it looks like lightening struck something on the water or dock behind the statue.
I'm no pro, but most of the photos I've seen of lightening strikes have the bolt hit the highest part of the structure, and then disappear inside the conductor.

21. It looks like it's hitting the shore behind the statue. That would
explain why there is no reflection. It's an optical illusion, but a great shot just the same.

6. A sign of the times. Every reply so far calls the photographer a liar.
Like everybody here is suddenly an expert on exactly what a lightning strike should and should not look like. The strike could be contacting the entire surface of the copper statue from the highest tip of the light to the base. That's what it looks like to me. Also, what about the glowing around the folds and edges of the statue where static discharge would light up exactly as it appears to be doing?

But no. It can't be. Because DUers all know better than the person who was actually there, so he was obviously lying.

Some times I just can't believe how members of this forum go off the deep end with their "superior wisdom and intelligence."

12. I blame Forrest Gump. Nothing has been "seeing is believing" ever since
And I think it was covered in a Gresham novel in the 90s already too.

Or, as seen elsewhere on the internets, "I can tell it's a Photoshop because I've seen quite a few in my time, and it's the pixels," LOL

19. Cool. Thanks. I figured it had to be pretty common. If lightning will
hit a golfer with a club raised 3' above him, it makes sense it would not avoid a 150' tall copper lady.

A sign that tall metal structures tend to get hit by lightning. :eyes:
