Yankee Fans' Organized Anti-Gay Chants. With video.
Not for the easily-upset, but....can we keep this kicked for a while? A lot of people, it seems to me, still need to understand *viscerally* how serious a matter is the social prejudice toward their fellow (glbt) citizens.

This was buried in GLBT. ( props to Will Parkinson, BTW) But it needs more exposure. MUCH more.

Also the video link promotes the October 20th observance.

Remember... this is NYC in the year 2010.

We live in a beautiful world, folks.

New York Yankees Promise To End Homophobic Taunting In The Stands
Responding to pressure from GLAAD, the New York Yankees have vowed to end homophobic taunting by their fans. The issue came to light on Tuesday thanks to a video (created by JMG reader Sean Chapin) which showed fans shouting an obscene version of Village People's YMCA at fans for opposing teams. Via GLAAD:
We reached out to the Yankees, and were extremely pleased with their reaction. Yankees spokesperson Alice McGillion told us “the Yankees have zero tolerance for this and any kind of abuse.” She said that security in the bleacher sections of the stadium will warn fans, before YMCA is played, that any type of homophobic abuse “will not be tolerated” and she assured us that any fans who take part in this ugly bullying will be ejected from the game. We’d like to thank McGillion and the Yankees organization for their prompt and proactive response.
The taunting has been a tradition at Yankee Stadium at least since 2006, when the original clip was first posted on YouTube, where it has received 200,000 views to date. Once again, here's Sean Chapin's version.>>>>

12. The taunting has been going
on at least since 2006. Now they're trying to do the right thing? Or only doing damage control when it became well known?

17. I'm thinking even before that.
When was the subway series? 2003? Yankee fans taunted Mike Piazza for being gay even though... far as I know he was not.

( Just good looking, well spoken and intelligent. Lots of folks conflate these qualities w. homosexuality. Don't ask me.)

It's fully supported by the RRRW, and tacitly endorsed by our own administration. Is it any wonder LGBT youth are killing themselves in droves?

13. Gee, it's a good thing this happened in 'liberal' NYC
Otherwise we'd be subjected to an endless string of 'only in such-and-such-place.' Goes to show ya, bigots & homophobes can be found in all parts of this country; it doesn't take much digging for them to reveal themselves. Please take this in the spirit in which it's intended, which is to gently chide regional chauvinists to cease their reflexive commentary every time something like this happens in the south, in Arizona, 'Pennsyltucky,' or wherever the fuck ever. No place is immune from idiocy like this, obviously. Blanket indictments of an entire state or region of the country serve only to keep us divided - and the repukes & their puppetmasters couldn't be happier about it.

And this place sure isn't liberal. I've heard more different kinds of ethnic slurs than I ever knew existed, this place really has got it's head up it's ass, even though it sometimes votes for the right people.

25. What place IS a 'liberal oasis' anyway?
People cite San Francisco all the time, but there are enclaves within that city whose residents are just as conservative as anywhere else. Any city you care to name has suburbs that are chock-a-block with conservatives. It saddens me when people post their 'progressiver-than-thou' condemnations of specific states or regions, thinking of the good Democrats, liberals & progressives who live in those areas. It's bad enough being a minority in such a place, but then to get a ration of shit from your supposed 'allies' is like rubbing salt in the wound.

31. It's a sort of "balkanized"-style liberalism.
Identity politics is HUGELY powerful here. It's a city of minorities and to the extent that liberalism serves the interests of one's particular "group", liberalism is popular.

When interests collide... liberalism wanes. Example: many traditionally liberal Jews jumped ship from Dinkins after the crown-height riots; result: Giuliani for 8 yrs and Bloomberg for 12. There's lots of antipathy between non-white communities as well... although that doesn't show up so much in "big" ( citywide races) as much as it does in local contests.

And I gotta think that some of those yankee homohaters are from the city, though chances are most drove in from nearby , much more conservative suburbs.

I'm speaking in generalities. There are plenty of ideological liberals here as well. But I'm thinking a lot of them moved here from somewhere else.

We need to introduce the notion of treating people with dignity back into the national dialogue. We can't let the fire-breathers take over this country. The legacy of the RW has destroyed too much in this country. Enough is enough.

28. That video pisses me off bigtime. . .
all the fu*king whining that conservatives do about "think of the children" and then this crap goes on in a public baseball stadium, with that kind of language being thrown around LOUDLY when children are attending a game? Why weren't their asses thrown out a long time ago for this heterosupremacist chant fest?

I'm already sick and tired of the slew of circus clown heterosupremacists who declare themselves "moral" and yet seem to know every last detail of an imagined gay sex life. . .and yet none of that is taught at school. I think we know now who the real perverts are. . .

We'll see if the Yankees ejects these clowns - if they do, good. . .but they should have been doing it a long time ago. Clearly these are the same people who escaped punishment for being bullies back when they are school, so, just like many right wingnuts, they carry it proudly into adulthood.

Notice that they can't do this song ALONE. . .or taunt anyone by themselves - like most cowards, they need a posse.

they're aberrations, bad apples from the bottom of the barrel who somehow snuck into the Stadium . . . the Yanks say they'll deal with them, and I'm sure they will . . .

fyi, my fondness for the team goes back to the '96-'00 Yankees, several of whom (Jeter, Pettitte, Posada, Mo) are still playing -- and quite well, thank you very much . . . I liked the way those guys played the game back then, and still do . . .

38. Yankees Fans... Always Classless
I had the misfortune to attend a Yankees/Orioles game on the 1-year anniversary of 9/11. Even down in Baltimore (because it's cheaper to travel 5 hours and get tickets to Camden Yards than to get tickets to a Yankees game) the fans were rude, crude, and socially unacceptable. Total jerks - dropping F-bombs all over the place, especially with kids around, etc.

"A dead Yankees fan in Camden Yards. Let me check the Maryland Law Books. That may not be considered a crime." - Det. Munch, "Homicide: Life on the Streets"
