I had to straighten someone out today...
Edited on Sat Oct-16-10 02:50 PM by PCIntern
...it's a wonder I ever get to fix any teeth in an election year...

One of my well-heeled, fabulously progressive, brilliant ladies came in today and she was just so exasperated with the 'situation' (and I'm not talking about the one on Jersey Shore), that she was actually talking about 'staying home' on Election Day.

I said, "WHAT?! You're going to essentially vote for the Republicans whom you despise ('Choice' is the watchword of her faith, so to speak) and help put Corbett and Toomey, the latter being a REAL nut job, into office. How can you even THINK to do that??"

She replied, "But I hate Sestak and Onorato seems like he's not in control." (BTW, she's a big donor to Dem and Progressive causes, AND, I know this will cause not a few folk here to get their undies all in a twist, she's an ardent supporter of Israel (as am I)).

I simply said, "You've been a patient of mine for over 30 years, your father was my professor and handed you off to me. I'm speaking as your father, you KNOW what he would want you to do. So do it, OK?"

She said, "I guess so...BUT I'M NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT!"

I said, "So be unhappy and do the right thing anyway."

1. Good job. Fight the battles as you can. (And staying home is NOT a viable option!)

2. I've had to have this conversation with a few Dems while phone banking
I am very tired of the "throw the bums out" meme, the "I hate negative ads so I'm staying home" meme (I hate em too, read the paper instead or talk to people), and "the Democrats failed me again" meme- what, you expected em to fix Bush's mess in 2 years? I hate how short an attention span the electorate have and how eager they are to "blame" and over-generalize.

To be fair, we Dems always do this when we are in power- we lose track of what the base wants or blame the left, and then let the Reps get control of the message. We have to believe what we are saying, act on it, and get the word out. That's the "situation" and highly exasperating.

3. So true.
I am very unhappy about Obama and what he's done so far, but as Chris Hayes said last night on Countdown, there's a reason the corporations are giving all that money to defeat Democrats.

9. Voting Democratic This Year Is Like Flossing
Edited on Sat Oct-16-10 04:19 PM by iamjoy
It may be a pain, but it's for your own good. And saying that you don't really like any of the flosses out there is not an excuse to skip it. Find the one you like better than the others and use it.

only, people should floss more frequently than they vote.

12. I've done some research
And I've found something very interesting: A vote cast while you're holding your nose and totally unhappy about it counts exactly the same as a vote cast while hooting, pumping your fist and dreaming of Sarah Palin.

I know; I was shocked, too.

15. "The right thing" according to you.
Voting for someone you don't want to elect is not universally perceived to be "the right thing."

I wish I could be rational. I think you got her - she'll vote and maybe not 'be happy about it' but, she'll get over it.
