VP Biden is at the Phillies game
hoping to see another gem from Roy Hallady. He called Halladay after the post season no hitter.

Pandering to those Neanderthals in Philly instead of the enlightened Bay Area.

19. This is a photograph of Michael Irvin taunting Philly fans before that game--
http://www.flickr.com/photos/74603520@N00/993123040/

It's copyrighted, so I won't post it, but as any good Philly resident knows, Mr. Irvin spent his pre-game riling up the fans in section 700.

So when he went down, it was hardly surprising that they responded in kind.

But I'll tell ya' a little philly story....

I was at the next home game--against the Giants. (I'm from NYC, and root for the Giants and the Yankees.) It was Halloween. I'm waiting for the elevator to the suites, and I turn and see a dude dressed in an Irvin jersey and helmet--with a backboard strapped to him.

He wasn't the only one with that costume.

;-)

20. I'm no Cowboy fan..
But Eagles fans cheered as Irvin was carted off the field having suffered a spinal cord injury which ended his career. I don't know how you can defend that..

26. I'm not defending it---just not surprised by it. It's why I didn't put my
Giants jersey on until I was in my suite, and took it off before I left.

34. And he said,
"Phillies fans must like something about me," Lincecum joked later about the whistling. "I was thinking, 'I must have a really nice butt.' "

25. If you are talking about MOVE, you know not of what you speak.
I lived in Philly then. Close enough to see the sky turn orange that night due to the resulting fire.

MOVE terrorized their neighbors. They basically took over a row home they did not own. And then fortified it.

They were not community organizers, unless scaring your neighbors is a way to organize them.

28. Christ--people always romaticize MOVE, but not the neighbors on Osage
Avenue....

The people of Osage avenue had to BEG the city to do something...and after a year, they finally did.

29. Exactly ...
MOVE was not a "community organization".

It was a few very crazy people who decided that they should be allowed to occupy a building, turn it into a compound, live there while paying no rent, and scare the hell out of the neighbors, which they did on a regular basis.

Most don't know that they also built an "addition" on the roof of that row home. Since row homes literally SHARE WALLS (I know, I grew up in one), that means that from their bunker, they could access the roof of any other home, AND ... they ultimately used that bunker as a way to shoot at police and fire fighters.

The "bomb" was a mistake ... and it failed for 2 reasons.

1) It was too powerful. But that was in part because the police knew that the house had been fortified with rail road ties. Heavy lumber.

2) No one knew that when the stand off began, the MOVE folks covered their roof, and the roofs of neighboring homes with gasoline. Their plan had been to light a fire if the police tried to come in via the roof. They would light the fire and roast the cops.

Of course the last point is that the MOVE folks helped seal their fate by using the railroad ties as a way to bulld a MAZE within the house. Their intent was to make the cops struggle if the entered. As it turend out, the maze trapped many of them.

And then, at the start of the fire, members of MOVE fired shots at the police and the firefighters. And the firefighters pulled back as a result.

32. excellent post--
A philly cop who was there that day told me something about the bunker--

It was surrounded by oil drums. The cops assumed that the oil drums were filled with sand. I mean, who builds a sniper's nest and surrounds it with oil drums filled with gasoline?

MOVE did.

As for the rail road ties--well I'm sure they thought they wouldn't have another 1978--but damn.

35. It is an amazing story ...
On a certain level, the police assumed that the folks within MOVE were acting within some "logical" framework.

Not that the "logical framework" was realistic, but that it existed. In reality, there was no logic.

31. damn right
"Community organizers". God almighty.

My sister's boyfriend at the time lived on that street. The MOVE people were a damn menace, and the second neighborhood they fouled and terrorized. They were drug dealers for crying out loud. "Community organizers"... holy flippin' cow.
