And naturally, it's the Philippines, one of the poorest countries in Asia, that's about to get clocked.

5. Not very comforting considering
that I'm presently reading "The Coming Global Superstorm" (Whitley Strieber) and this scenario is how the next ice age begins in response to global warming...

7. Yep... First Thing That Came To My Mind Was...
those "fictional" super storms in the movie, "The Day After Tomorrow".

Is this a preview of things to come?

19. That book is quackery and BS.
It's where the got the plot for "The Day After Tomorrow". Bunch of crap popularized by Arch-Woo-meister Art Bell.

May they find shelter.

10. Recent Businessweek article re Megi (aka Juan) -
Philippines Issues Highest Storm Alert, Braces for Typhoon Megi
October 17, 2010, 12:28 PM EDT
More From Businessweek

By Cecilia Yap

Oct. 18 (Bloomberg) -- The Philippines issued its highest alert for Typhoon Megi as the strongest storm to hit the Asian nation this year is set to make landfall in northern Luzon today. Signal No. 4 has been hoisted in the provinces of Cagayan and Isabela as Megi, known in the Philippines as Juan, gained strength, packing maximum wind of 225 kilometers per hour (140 mph) and gustiness of as much as 260 kilometers per hour, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical & Astronomical Services Administration told reporters yesterday.

“Juan may intensify further before making landfall,” said Nathaniel Servando, the agency’s deputy administrator. “Given La Nina, this may not even be the strongest typhoon for the year,” he said, referring to the weather event that brings above-normal rain in Asia. The storm is forecast to leave the country tomorrow...

And the casualty count will be low. Probably going to leave a lot of people homeless.

This suckers a monster, according to Jeff Masters it's top sustained winds may be almost 200mph, not 180, based on the data from the hurricane hunters.

26. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Isabela province which is where this monster is heading..
I hope it weakens somewhat when it hits the coast and the mountains before it reaches the populous areas in the Cagayan valley. It seems the Philippines suffers more natural disasters than any other country -- typhoons, volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, droughts.. they suffer them all repeatedly. Very sad.
