Thought Christine O'Donnell was bad my wife just told me about a
"debate" she had thru IM with a person she knew from college. The Friend was trying to defend O'Donnell and explained that the Pledge of Allegiance proves that Christianity is our National Religion.

My wife explained to this woman that the words "Under God" did not appear in the Pledge until 1954 and showed her friend the Wiki page.

1. Huh?
I mean, even if the Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1787 with the phrase "under God" how would that make us a Christian nation?

10. I remember that salute!
I must have been in elementary school at the time (I'm 80), and I was wondering when it changed to the hand-over-heart gesture. I just read about via Google -- thank you for bringing it up.

3. Basically in the friends mind One nation Under God means a
Christian God. Meaning we do not say one nation under Allah, Buddha, ETC...

Therefore this proves Christianity is our state religion.

4. LOL...sounds like the kind of person that would think...
the Pilgrims were our "Founding Fathers".

I got into a conversation with a guy like that once. He referenced the Pledge and the wording on money and told me that the people who landed in Plymouth were our nations founders. No, sorry fella, but that colony was ultimately annexed by another one, but still, they weren't in on writing the Constitution.

15. It's not so much "what they're teaching," it's what students want to take from it
More and more, people see college as merely a ticket to higher income. So, they simply absorb what's useful for their careers, and discard the rest. :(

20. Yeah! And the Dinosaurs only went extinct a few years before that!
And that was just because Adam And Eve rode em hard and put em away wet but, I mean, What the fuck? We have Dominion and all and does it really matter because the Rapture is coming just as soon as we can goad Israel into Nuking Iran so who cares?

9. The Pledge of Allegiance isn't even a law
let alone in the Constitution. College. I'm just supposed to automatically acquiesce to the degree, or so some folks would have me believe. I don't think so.

'Under god' was added in '54. What was going on then, you ask? Well, it was that all american senator from Wisconsin. None other than Joe McCarthy. It was added to keep us safe from the dreaded Reds.

in school. So, it really has not been that long. It is certainly within the memory of many Americans living today.
