Note: The door-knocking, the campaign contributions, and the phone-banking are absolutely vital, but I hope we don't overlook what may be the simplest and easiest means of helping the good guys win in this election. We just need to make sure all the non-wingnuts we know get out there and vote.
The crazies are fired up, and they'll all be voting. But they're still a minority. The only way they win is if the sensible people you know stay home. We mustn't let that happen.
If you think there's any merit to what I'm saying, then you may want to send some variation of this message to your own friends in Wisconsin, and elsewhere.
Peril behind the Cheddar Curtain
Hey guys,
I hope you can forgive me for intruding with this public service announcement. I know it's no secret to you that one of our finest and most principled senators, Russ Feingold, is fighting for his political life there in Wisconsin. It's also no secret that his opponent, who is outspending Feingold 3 to 1, is a dangerous nutcase.
So, what's a mother to do? Well, here in Minnesota, I've been making my own low-key and casual get-out-the vote effort. That means just chatting with family and friends who aren't nutcases, and making sure they're actually gonna make it to the polls on the 2nd. In most cases, I don't even bother to tell them how I think they should vote. They're good, sane people, and I know they'll do the right thing, if they do anything at all.
The bad guys are a minority. I figure they can only win if the good guys stay home. I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but I hope you'll be checking in with your friends too, just to make sure they're not too busy to cast a vote that day. And if they do the same with their friends, well...
Feingold has nearly closed the gap in the most recent polls, and he has the momentum, although not the lead. I sure hope we can hang on to him.
Thanks for hearing me out,
Ed
