Is my assessment of this election correct in my response to an old friend?
Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 11:47 AM by cleanhippie
This is my latest response to him when I made the statement "If the Right gets the majority, we are screwed, If the Left maintains the majority, we are screwed."

Is my assessment correct?

------------------
Him: So you are saying we a screwed no matter what? Please explain.

Me: Yes, but screwed in different ways depending on the outcome.

If the right wins the majority, we will spend the next two years fighting the implementation of the same policies and practices that put us in the situation we are in now. In addition, we will see a very strong effort to privatize SS and gut social programs (that regardless of cost, right now, DO hold the seams together of this society). We are in agreement that the spending and the waste has got to stop, the argument is where do we start. The right wants to keep the sacred cow of Defense untouched, and IMO, THAT is where the biggest and deepest cuts need to be made, first and foremost. But thats another conversation.

If the left maintains the majority, the right will continue to obstruct everything, regardless of what it is or how positive it may be, simply because they do not want to give any credit to the left at all. All one has to do is watch the attack ads on TV that blame Dems for not doing anything in the last 2 years (duh, the Repubs have obstructed everything) to see what I am talking about, even though this country VOTED to change Congress in 2006 to Dem, and VOTED to change the Executive to Dem in 2008. If they VOTE again to keep Dems in control, will it be understood that THAT is what this country wants? I doubt it.

In addition, if the left maintains power, the wing-nut right will become even more rabid and insane. If there is ONE thing that I do not understand, is this middle-aged white person persecution complex these people have. The world is changing, we are becoming even MORE of a melting pot, and whites in this country are GOING to become just another face in the crowd, not the ones running the show exclusively. That fact scares many, many people, and the wing-nut fringe of the right is playing that up as much as possible. And to what end? What are they trying to accomplish? Keeping it up will destroy this country, and you and I both know that.

So to recap, if the right wins, we screwed, and if the left wins, were screwed because the right will go insane.
I don't know how to better put it. You can reply with "well, what about the left that did this or that", and you may be right, but that in no way invalidates the point I am trying to make, and that is that the extreme right is in control of the Republican Party right now, and those people are what is the biggest threat to this country right now. You can agree or disagree, I don't care, but thats what I see from my house.
