pastor found dead in son's pitbull pen (17 dogs)
Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 01:29 PM by Liberal_in_LA
CALLAWAY COUNTY - 84-year-old Reverend John Reynolds was found mauled in a pen where his son raised pit bulls. The Callaway County Sheriff's Department said Reynolds' son, also named John Reynolds, found his body last week with injuries consistent of an animal attack.

The Sheriff's Department said it doesn't expect to file any charges. And as for the dogs, the county said it does not have the resources to handle so many. The dogs remain on the property with Reynolds' son. The Sheriff's Department said there are six adult pitbulls and 11 puppy pitbulls. Reynolds' son said three of the 17 are not pitbulls.

Reynolds' lived on property off Osage Court in Callaway County near Williamsburg in Kingdom of Callaway Estates. His property is cluttered with cars, trailers and fencing. One dog sat near a damaged barbed wire fence with its leash looped around a tree. Barking echoed from behind a garage-like structure and trailers.

His son said he doesn't think any of his pitbulls killed his father. He believes the attack could have been from a mountain lion or stray dogs. The Missouri Department of Conservation said Reynolds' bite wounds do not match a mountain lions bite.

One neighbor who didn't want to give her name said the dogs run loose from time to time, coming into her yard. She has called the Sheriff's department before about Reynolds' dogs. She said the department told her there's nothing it can do.

Willamsburg Pastor Found Dead in Pen of Pitbulls

Authorities in Callaway County are investigating the 84-year-old pastor's death and the pastor's son, also named John Reynolds, doesn't believe his 17 pit bulls are responsible, even though his father's "injuries were consistent with an animal attack," according to KSDK-TV (via the Associated Press).

Then what happened?

The son believes that stray dogs or perhaps even a mountain lion may have been responsible for the attack.

I'm not about to tell someone how to grieve, so I'll just say that I guess it's possible although unlikely.

Aggression from dogs high in pack drive

Pack drive consists of behaviors associated with reproduction and being part of a group. Dogs in pack drive may

* Show signs of aggression toward people

* Attack other dogs with no apparent reason

* Not stop the attack when the other dog submits

4. He thinks stray dogs went into the pen with 17 pit bulls?
Seems like he doesn't know much about dogs.

7. The fact that he kept 17 pit bulls in one pen is proof of that.

8. Well, Cesar Millan does it
and I've known people with 10+ dogs who all get along, but it takes work.

5. I would use stronger language than that.
The guy is in denial. Sad. He was found in the pen. Unless the dogs fought off his attackers and dragged him to the 'safety' of the pen....nah, I just don't buy it.

6. Right. So 6 adult pit bulls allowed some stray dogs to enter
the pen and kill the father.

Like anyone would believe that.

12. I saw a clip on this and the dogs did not appear at all agressive.
A lot of tail-wagging puppies.

And while I fundamentally oppose puppy mills, it's just possible that there's more to the story than "evil pit bulls".

Don't buy the mountain lion bit, though - no way any non-rabid cat is jumping into a pen with 17 dogs, even if they are only half-grown.

I'm amused at the photos when googling his name. One shows a dog with teeth/mouth open, one of those OMGPITBULL!!! photos NOT of the dogs involved. I guess these pictures were too tame.

16. Maybe it was Colombian drug runners.
Sounds like this guy is using the OJ Simpson theory of alternate suspects.

Dogs are dangerous in packs.
