"Now Hiring" sign out but no job openings? I got my hair permed last

week at a local branch of HairMasters. I noticed as I came in there was a "Now Hiring" sign up. I mentioned this to my hairdresser, because I thought, who knows maybe the economy is getting better. (I wasn't interested; I'm the last person to be a hairdresser.)

She told me there were no position openings, but the main office wanted them to leave the sign out. WTF? She didn't know the reason for it.

That's just wasting the time of the applicants and the people working there too...go figure....

1. Just like the corps attending job fairs to keep their image in front of the public
They don't bring jobs, just bright, shiny brochures.

4. Draws people in to the business. Some will come in to apply for a job and buy something whether

there is an opening or not.

We were told to tell them to go online for an application.

Getting people in the door is half of making sales. I worked at an Autozone and corporate had us put up a "now hiring" all the time, whether we were hiring or not. Most people who would come in the door looking for work would buy a soda (job hunting is a thirsty task in the GA heat) or some knick-knack for their car.

5. Not a total waste of time -
it acts as a repository for applications for long-term unemployed people who must apply to X number of jobs each week to keep getting unemployment.

7. It helps keep employees fearful and therefore malleable.
It allows the owners to test the market for the availability of hair dressers, their level of expertise, and what they're willing to work for.

And it creates foot traffic into the store, which helps the perception that it is a busy place, which implies it is a good place.
