Chinese drywall settlement covers repairs to 9 homes in Alabama (B'ham News)
Martin Swant --- The Birmingham News

Repairs to nine Alabama homes will be paid for by a Chinese drywall company whose product is said to have damaged appliances and caused health problems, according to a Birmingham lawyer.

The company, Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin Co., agreed last week to pay for the remediation of more than 200 homes in the Southeast, as well as a stipend to pay for relocation costs, attorney Brian Collins said Tuesday. His firm represented the homeowners in the case.

Residents in Jefferson, Shelby and St. Clair counties and across the Southeast blamed Chinese drywall for a range of problems in homes built during the mid-2000s. Problems included metal corrosion on appliances, electrical system failures and health problems.

The drywall, imported during the U.S. housing boom and the rebuilding effort after Hurricane Katrina, is thought to be tainted with sulfuric compounds. When those compounds combine with moisture in the air, they corrode all types of metal.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommended in April that affected homes be gutted.
