4. I love Joel Pett!
He also edits a Sunday reprint of some of the best political cartoons of the week for the L.A. Times, with a brief commentary (usually a paragraph or two).

And Pett's commentary is usually as incisive as the cartoonists' works.

K&R!

5. He does one here on Saturday.
He is the cartoonist for our local paper, The Lexington Herald-Leader.

Here's his page at the Newseum.

8. Yeah, but we love him
What do they know? They probably don't even get it. It just strikes them as vaguely Liberal (and therefore commie/socilist/fascist/Kenyan). :)

10. Of course
Controversy sells papers. In L.A., the Times hired a conservative political cartoonist for a while. In blue Los Angeles, that naturally led to a lot of interest and a lot of LTTEs--from both sides.

11. He goes after both parties, but only the right hates him.

He portrayed a corrupt Dem governor as a Stoat (weasel). An even more corrupt Rep governor had a flat head and a halo held up by a coat hanger.

Is that pinboy as in bowling? I did that for a while when I was young and felt immortal.

12. Ha!
Not bowling, though I did that, too. It was my last radio callsign in Vietnam.

13. OK. I didn't go to Nam. I was an 05H in Asmara
I was a ditty bopper.

14. I had to google that one
And I found an old discussion on military.com with comments indicating 05H evolved through some changes, then was eliminated or combined with other MOS's. I knew some ASA vets years ago, but never heard 'ditty bopper.' And my only experience with Morse was in Boy Scouts. :)

I was Infantry, and my younger brother (who served with me in VN), was in Personnel. My older brother was a Marine who got out before VN, but almost invaded Laos before that plan was aborted at the last minute.

You must have worn this...

BTW, that mil.com discussion is here, in case you're interested:

Thanks for serving, alfredo.

15. Yeah, the old Lightning fast chicken fucker. We had some at
Phu Bai and Saigon. My post was in one of the perfect locations for morse intercept. We were on an 8,600 ft volcano west of the Red Sea. Read about us in this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Didnt-Do-You-Betrayed-African/dp/0060780924 Chapter ten is about the gross guys at Kagnew Station.

They had a way of keeping us in line. Screw up and lose your clearance, you are immediately reclassified 111 and shipped to Nam. Untrained, out of shape = body bag.

We still raised hell, consumed huge amounts of booze and weed, but we got the job done.

Welcome home Bro.

19. You don't take a backseat to anyone.
My tools were headphones, an R390A, and an Underwood Telegrapher's Mill: Boring but relatively safe. At that time boring was good.

I ended up spending 3 years on that volcano. I had signed up for Vietnam, but they sent me to Africa. Not disappointed.

Damn thing ruined my ears.
