13 youths shot dead at Ciudad Juarez party
from the LA Times:

Reporting from Mexico City — Gunmen stormed a party in the border city of Ciudad Juarez and opened fire, killing at least 13 people and wounding 14 others, authorities said Saturday.

The Friday night shooting carried grim echoes of an attack on a Juarez teen party in January that left 15 people dead and raised a national outcry.

In the latest case, authorities said a group of men armed with assault rifles burst into the party, which was being held in two adjacent homes in a neighborhood called Horizontes del Sur.

The attackers opened fire "in an indiscriminate manner," said Carlos Gonzalez, spokesman for the prosecutor's office in the state of Chihuahua. Investigators found signs of more than 70 shots having been fired. ..........(more)

4. Sounds like someone or people at the party came from a family that was fighting the cartels.
They are a vindictive, vicious, blood thirsty bunch that has to be stopped.

11. No, probably prohibition related..
This wouldn't have happened without the drug war, when was the last time we saw a massacre by alcohol dealers?

6. If there was one problem in the world I could solve, it would be this one.
I fantasize about some kind of nonviolent revolution on a scale that the drug cartels couldn't challenge...imagine a million Mexican mothers standing at gunpoint and refusing to be afraid. What would happen? But I think that's from reading too much Walter Wink. I don't know how the Hell to organize that (technically it would be illegal if I ever had the opportunity anyway, since foreigners are forbidden from participating in any political activity in Mexico), or if there's even any effective way to do it at all .

I think removing the lucrative black market through legalization would be a blow to the cartels; but I don't know if that much greed and brutality is going to just disappear. They could just switch to human trafficking or something. I don't know. I don't understand this problem. Mexico has such an incredibly rich culture and history; it saddens me deeply to see its citizens suffering so much, moreso because I only poorly understand the causes of their suffering.

8. We're reaching some real dark parts of the human psyche...
... when things like this keep happening.

Those poor ordinary citizens caught in the violence--how terrifying every day must be.

12. Second time this year
15 dead at a teen party in January.

Bit by bit, the unspoken taboos are being broken -- civilians, priests, women, children, US Americans, have all fallen to indiscrimnate killing. Showcases of mutilated bodies have been left in sight of elementary schools.

Perhaps the most frightening part is that institutional corruption has become so thick and tangled, there is no one who can be trusted. Not the army, not the police, not the federales.

Here's another sign of how fucked up things are -- the recently appointed police chief for the border town of Práxedis Guadalupe Guerrero is a 20 year old college student... A. 20. Year. Old. Student. The last chief was kidnapped and beheaded, she's the only one with the steel to take the job. She'll be lucky to make it to 22.
