If there’s one thing Illinois needs now, it’s certainty — certainty a candidate is who he says he is and can deliver what he says he can.

That’s why today we endorse Alexi Giannoulias for U.S. Senate.

Giannoulias, a Democrat who is the state treasurer, is running against U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk, a Republican who has represented Chicago’s North Shore. Up until this campaign, Kirk had built a strong record as a centrist. He had established himself as a politician with sound judgment and a distinguished military career as a naval intelligence officer.

Who Kirk is now, we couldn’t tell you.
