The ad
A television ad blasts U.S. Rep Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, by linking him to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the federal stimulus plan and the health care reform bill. The final seconds of the ad feature a photograph that the Michigan Messenger last week reported was doctored: The image shows Schauer standing next to Pelosi as if they are arm in arm.
The race: Schauer is the Democratic nominee seeking re-election to Michigan's 7th Congressional District. On Nov. 2, he will challenge Republican Tim Walberg, of Tipton, a former U.S. representative.
Who paid: Tim Walberg for Congress
The controversy
The original photo was shot June 10, on the balcony of the speaker's office in Washington, according to Pelosi's staff. Four people who posed with the two lawmakers appear to have been removed: two Michigan State University students who won the 2010 National Debate Tournament last year, their debate coach and debate director.
In the original photo, three of the people were standing between the speaker and Schauer.
