PG&E fixes 38 leaking pipelines in wake of blast

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. found and repaired 38 leaking natural gas pipelines after regulators forced the utility to examine its entire network after last month's fatal explosion in San Bruno, according to a report released Monday.

Four of the leaks were found on transmission lines, large pipes like the one that ruptured on Sept. 9, destroying a neighborhood and killing eight people. The other repairs were on smaller distribution lines or other equipment, according to the report PG&E filed with the California Public Utilities Commission.

One of the leaks, in the Butte County city of Gridley, required workers to replace a decades-old segment of transmission pipe that had a leaky weld. The other three leaking transmission pipes were found in American Canyon, Napa and Hollister (San Benito County). All of the leaks were repaired. None was in San Bruno.

Many leaks required relatively minor work such as tightening bolts, utility officials reported.
