Top Ten Most Murderous States for Women Killed by Men
Vermont's the big surprise for me:

According to this year's analysis, in 2008 (the most recent year available) Nevada, with a rate of 2.96 per 100,000, had the highest rate of females killed by males in the nation. Ranked behind Nevada were: Vermont at 2 with a rate of 2.54 per 100,000; Alabama at 3 with a rate of 2.07 per 100,000; North Carolina at 4 with a rate of 2.05 per 100,000; Tennessee at 5 with a rate of 1.97 per 100,000; Texas at 6 with a rate of 1.72 per 100,000; Arkansas at 7 (tie) with a rate of 1.71 per 100,000; Missouri at 7 (tie) with a rate of 1.71 per 100,000; South Carolina at 9 with a rate of 1.69 per 100,000; and, Georgia at 10 with a rate of 1.66 per 100,000.

13. Well, but what kind of numbers are we talking?
If they had a particularly high amount in one year... as in one or two more than the last year... could that skew it? Or are we talking bigger numbers?

7. Small state, lower population
You're talking an average here.......two or three more killings a year shifts the goalposts greatly.

4. I think a lot of factors go into this,
not the least being that if there were 1817 murders and your state isn't all that populous one extra murder can bump you up a lot of places.

What's the flipside? men killed by women? men killed by men? how do the numbers vary? is a woman's death worse than a man's? I don't think it is. maybe that's just me.

9. The report is issued in conjunction with the Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
My guess would be the men killing women is much more common and, if so, indicative of the problem.

10. It is not that a woman's death is somehow 'worse' than a man's death,
but it goes to the degree of victimization of women. Often, when a man kills a man, it is in a fight or argument and an out-of-control contest between equals - whether it's two drunks brawling in a parking lot or a gang-banger gunning down a rival. Victimization doesn't come into it. When a man kills a woman, most often it is from him attempting to impose his self-considered rightful dominance BECAUSE she is a woman.

It is the sickness of patriarchy.

12. That definitely happens and by no stretch of the imagination
am I implying it doesn't.

But, there were 16,442 murders total in 2008 in the US. 1817 of those were women. Are you really going to stick with gangbangers and drunks? Many of those men killed were just as victimized. And equals? I walk down the street sometimes at night in Durham and I'm few people's equal physically at 150 lbs and 5'10".

My original questions dealt only with the rankings since the southeast was stacking up poorly. I was merely wondering if all the crime statistics stacked up that way or if we were more "woman unfriendly" to put it ridiculously lightly. But you and 2 others seem to think questions equal misogyny... so whatever.

14. And one more thing
almost every responder here started with the red state = conservative = woman murderer canard. My first point was that the factors here are much more complex. Especially when the numbers are so low relative to population. I'm actually kind of offended that I was called out on asking a few logical questions.

PS not just to you but I'm not going to respond to everyone.

8. I notice most of them are red (Therefore, conservative) states.

Conservative people are usually of the mindset that supports a patriarchal society.

11. Yep. They're also angry because the world is changing and they can't stop it.
No more job you can sail into after high school because your dad worked there. Brown people (gasp!) making money. Women standing up for themselves. Bullies getting push-back. Makes an ignorant (usually white) man furious.
