While schools across the country are taking action against bullying and suicide, a board member of an Arkansas school district is encouraging "queers" and "fags" to kill themselves on his Facebook page.

Clint McCance is a board member of the Midland school district in east Arkansas. Responding to the purple shirts worn by many on Wednesday to support LGBT youth, McCance wrote the following message on his Facebook page, "Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers killed themselves. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed thereselves because of their sin. REALLY PEOPLE."

Whacked out, nutjob school board members like this who get elected to the board and cause havoc. In most cases it isn't as dramatic as this, but rather stealth board members who cut budgets, cut classes, set curriculum, insert there own believes, etc. etc. This has been a rising problem for the past thirty years as RW fundies figured out early that getting elected to their local school board was easy, and they could cause lots of damage there.

What other public profession, such as fire fighter or the police, allows such massive control exercised by a few people who are driven by their own political agenda and who are not experts in the field?

None, and yet we allow this sort of practice to happen in our schools out of the misguided notion that the public needs as much input into schools as there can possibly be. This is what we end up with, bigots, idiots and freaks running the show, attacking education, attacking teachers and attacking our children.

Yet it is teachers who get hammered time and again for matters that are out of their control.

Frankly, as undemocratic as this may seems, board members need to be appointed, and they need to be qualified, former teachers or administrators. Electing yahoos from the community simply hasn't worked.
