The telephone call came 19 years later, nearly to the day after one of America's most riveting scandals played out on national television. On Oct. 9, Virginia Thomas, wife to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, called Anita Hill at her office at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. Virginia Thomas asked Hill for an apology that she felt was nearly two decades overdue.

The incident, first reported Tuesday by ABC News, has jolted the nation back to the days of the tumultuous hearings when Hill leveled her explosive allegations against Thomas, then a nominee for the court. On Oct. 11, 1991, in testimony that stunned the Senate Judiciary Committee, Hill detailed the sexual harassment claim against her former boss, saying he made comments to her about women's breasts, group sex and bestiality.

Hill's accusations and Thomas' denial prompted a nationwide debate over who was telling the truth. It fired up women and helped sweep more women into Congress in 1992.
