The Right Is CHEERING For Tim Proffitt
Edited on Wed Oct-27-10 11:56 AM by KingOfLostSouls
I want everyone to stop and think about that for a second.

two grown men held down a small women and curb stomped her.

and the right is CHEERING this.

all across the blogosphere, across television and radio.

"she deserved it." "she had it coming." "she should apologize to him." "its about time someone got a liberal." "they should learn their place." or flat out "shoulda finished her off."

STOP

and

THINK

we've seen this before in history and we all know how it ends.

hasn't people like frank shaeffer warned us about this?

didn't barry goldwater predict ages ago that once the religious right took over, politics itself would be over?

bill clinton at the 2004 DNC said it, "these people love power and they know how to get it."

this is about power, about control, and anyone who gets in their way, well...violence is the preferred solution.

Just as a reminder, Knoxville, TN is the home of the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church where Jim David Adkisson killed two people and injured seven others.

Billo, Insannity and Michael Savage Wiener were all on his reading list.

again, all a person has to do is even just a bare bones bit of research into the militia movement, the psychology of authoritarianism and its followers, and some of the stuff frank shaeffer has talked about.

the mainstream republican party is and has been playing with fire on this matter to get power for their corporate masters but this unholy alliance makes the reagan movement seem tame.

has been an increased level of agression - like all the anger coming from the teabaggers during the last election cycle - all the yelling and disruption. Seems to me it is reaching new heights.

And this agression is not being lost on the children imo. Seems to make it all the more acceptable.

IT only means that the longer an internet discussion goes the closer to 1 the probability becomes that a Nazi reference will be made.

It does not now, nor ever did, mean that the person who mentions the Nazis loses the argument. That little addition always seems to made by people who lose arguments online.

If you are thinking to put this up as some kind of "Republicans stomp people" type of meme it is going to fail badly among all but the faithful... people are smart enough about these things these days to discount this entirely on the basis of her being paid to act as she did. The first question anyone non-partisan is going to ask, is what she was doing confronting the rethug candidate in the first place, and the obvious answer is that she was paid to cause trouble, willingly took on the mission, and found the trouble she was looking for.

54. Let's be real
If you've ever seen a real stomping, you know that it is a stretch to call this by that name. Watching the video you can see it's just that one guy, and he is immediately told off by others there, and quite frankly it's practically a love tap she received. If this is "stomping" to you, you are clearly innocent of what a real stomping, as it is known where this sort of thing is a regular occurrence, is like.

Second... she is lucky that she didn't fare much worse - having seen other videos that show the incident in more context, she was hardly an innocent bystander. She launched herself at the candidate's vehicle and shoved her sign inside at the passenger, which is arguably an assault in and of itself - and most certainly not any form of valid political expression. Just imagine if someone approached, say, Obama's motorcade and tried to shove something into his vehicle!

Having seen more context than you have, I can confidently say that she lied outright to Olbermann about what she did and how this situation occurred, as one would expect a paid political activist to do. It is as likely that she will be charged with a minor violent crime herself as be able to sue anyone successfully over this.

57. It's not a "real" stomping because what ... they didn't kill her? And she's "lucky?" about that?
Edited on Thu Oct-28-10 01:39 PM by DirkGently
Unbelievable. And then there's the law. Nothing she did or is even accused of doing in any way, under any law, justifies pinning her to the ground and restraining her in the first place. So there's assault and battery and unlawful restraint. They knew who she was and what she was about from prior encounters. They didn't think she was there to do violence. They just didn't like her.

Profitt then stood on her face and neck and pushed down. Against a curb. Had the "love tap" been a fraction more forceful, she'd likely be dead or paralayzed. So if the idea here is that the coward stomping on the head of a motionless, pinned-down young woman was somehow showing "restraint," the best that can be said is that he stopped short of murdering her.

Perhaps a medal is in order?

Then the coward grudgingly got off the woman's head and shook his finger at her and mouthed some kind of "so there" to emphasize his "victory" in the beatdown. He wasn't sorry. He was pleased with himself. For gang beating a woman who had the audacity to nearly annoy Rand Paul.

Had a "Muslim" or a "New Black Panther" shoved a 23-yr-old white conservative woman to the pavement and given her head a concussion-causing "love tap" with a bootheel, no one would be suggesting she might have deserved it, or that she was lucky she wasn't beat up more viciously for being such an "agitator." There'd be a deafening scream from every conservative source for the blood of the perpetrator that could be heard on the moon.

Jesus.

Edited for grammar.

73. If someone goes out looking for trouble
then no one should cry for them when they get it.

This girl engaged in a very premeditated (and apparently repeated) act intended to provoke. She disguised herself with a wig - who disguises themselves unless they have something to hide? She lunged towards a security-sensitive vehicle and shoved her sign inside, the videotape directly contradicting her testimony in the post-hoc interview on MSNBC. She was cheerful and unbruised, which strongly contradict any assertion that she is the victim of some measure of brutality.

She was a provocateur, and a paid one; she did her job, manufactured a controversy out of thin air, and her cheerfulness afterward reflects that. A lot of naive people here have never seen real brutality - I have, and I can tell you the victims of brutality are never cheerful about it and often have difficulty discussing it at all.

This thread is an excellent example of all that is wrong with the Democratic Party today. Obsessed with the trivial, ready to believe any liar that confirms its biases, videotape evidence notwithstanding. A manufactured incident of no real significance hits the top of the charts, while more weighty issues - say, fraud in the financial sector and epidemic political corruption at all levels that threaten to destroy the country entirely - pass with barely a notice.

I have gotten more replies to my plain factual analysis of this incident than I have on almost any thread or other post I've ever put up here, and that's an incredibly sad statement about the misplaced priorities that have led the party to the brink of electoral disaster, and the country to financial ruin.

80. If a wig is so "provacative" to excuse curb stomping, what violence do tricorns & guns excuse?
Edited on Fri Oct-29-10 12:48 PM by DirkGently
"Provacateur?" "Looking for trouble?" How about strapping on a gun and a sign talking about watering the tree of liberty with the blood of patriots? How about accusing the President of murdering people and being a Nazi AND a communist over a healthcare bill?

How about burning Congressional reps in effigy? How about shouting down rational debate about healthcare with corporate funded, organized screaming about "death panels?"

May we asume if THESE hundreds and thousands(or millions, if you watch Fox News) of organized provacateurs, rather than one 23-yr-old woman, were pinned to a curb and given a concussion-inducing stomp, that would likewise be a non-issue?

The rest of us will take that under advisement.

There's nothing "plain" nor "factual," in your posts here. You're applying a bizarre double standard that contorts into bizarre geometries attempting to excuse and rationalize rightwing extremists' outrageous behavior, right up through and including very real, very brutal physical violence that is absolutely significant.

I'd love see anyone calling this curb stomping a "love tap" put to the Sean Hannity waterboarding test. If you think it's such a picnic, volunteer to have it done to you. Sean demurred when given the opportunity to put his body where his mouth is. I'm pretty sure the same would apply to curb stomping. Hey, a concussion is only cranial bleeding and brain damage. One by itself is only rarely fatal. What's the big, right?

Let's get something else straight: The MANUFACTURED RAGE here belongs SOLELY to the rightwingers and their ever-more-dark-and threatening rhetoric. Fake rage is their entire game, in fact. That is ALL they are selling. These are, after all, self-styled "patriots," comparing themselves to the Founding Fathers, no less, while wailing about "Marxism" and "Communism" and "Nazis" and "Death Panels," when all they're really mad about is the supposed "tyranny" of the rich paying their taxes and health insurance reform. And of course, their rather transparent pain at seeing a black man elected President in "their" country.

"Their" country. As though those that dare disagree are foreign invaders who have stolen some unnamed birthright. Their theme is "taking our country back," with an implied (and often expressed) corollary that they will do this "by any means necessary."

They BEGAN with a theme of violence and have ratcheted it up ceaselessly since Obama took office, from Glenn Beck's "special" on the coming tax-pocalypse to Sharon Angle's "Second Amendment remedies," to the gun-toting self-appointed "Constitutionalists" shadowing Obama's speeches to "We came unarmed ... this time."

If liberals or immigrants or Muslims, or any one else but the self-annointed Angry White Protestants in this country merely strapped on a gun, or merely burned a public figure in effigy, or merely urged their supporters to "buy all the ammo you can," they would have been instantly condemned as dangerous, violent radicals.

And had any other group beaten someone down in this way, the wails of rage and calls for blood from conservatives would be deafening. Remember, they're still wetting their pants over two black guys shouting slogans in a black voting district. Imagine if those guys had so much as TOUCHED some conservative "provacateur" in a teabag hat waving an "Obamunist" sign.

And speaking again of who is "provoking" WHOM, calling this young woman a provacateur in the context of these fucking gun swinging lunatics who flavor every action with a threat of armed violence is a bad joke. And calling them on their first tentantive foray into open violence now is a favor to THEM, because if someone in these organizations doesn't throw some cold water on these rightwingers sitting around rubbing their rage nuts and deciding that they're "not gonna take it anymore" because a black man is President, they're going to do something even stupider and more violent, and the non-crazy contingent of America, which is a lot larger and a lot more determined than the knuckle-draggers understand, will be obliged to extinguish their little Tea Party with a firehose.

I'd respectfully suggest that anyone thinking of ways to try to paper over this crystal clear case of the current batch of rightwing fruitloops gratifying their oft-hinted longing for mob violence keep that in mind.

editted for speling.

92. Well done Dirk. Have you made this an OP yet? The young woman was peacefully protesting....
... doing something many of us did during the Bush admin.

I myself joined some dress-up protests where a friend in a top hat flung fake money with Bush's pic on it to the crowd.

And doesn't anyone remember Billionaires for Bush?!

96. Sadly, we had no chapter where I live. But one of our VFP members had lotsabucks...
... and he got us a Rolls Royce for our protest in front of the city's lone Federal building (ironically, a bankruptcy court).

I participated in a lot of marches, but when it came to actual street theater I finally had to assess where I wanted my future to be here. I participated in several different dress-up protests, but this is a relatively small city and I actually have a name as a person who engages issues seriously -- during the Bush regime I helped put on some town hall meetings, spoke before the City Council, stuff like that.

Not that the B4B aren't serious -- they are. I'd looove to be part of one of their events one day. I'd laugh for a week.

She did know what she was doing, yes. But she did it brilliantly and the results were much better than she ever could have hoped for or imagined. In NO WAY do I mean it would have been better if she was really beat up, but for what she had to endure, I am sure the resulting publicity is worth it to her. I cover it in this post in more detail

88. Lauren did a great job before, during and after the Rand Paul Stomp.
Lauren Valle is much more than we knew when we first saw her. All I can say is WOW.

She annoyed, she agitated, she freaked out and she scared the Rand Paul team. They knew her and they still did something horrific and incredibly stupid.

Lauren's persistence got her the "money shot" of the entire campaign.

If the Rand Paul people were not idiots, there might have been a picture of Rand with a sign. Big woop. But, because of Lauren's brash courage, we got the most chilling and compelling video of the entire campaign. Video that is infinitely more effective in exposing the stompers for what they are.

Lauren did her JOB and a hard job it is. The Right is saying she is a professional protester. I agree. She is an amazing pro.

She has put herself on the front line, in harms way, willing to "take one for the team". She knew that what she did could lead to pain, danger and more. I have a seen a lot of sport/battle/fight rhetoric here on DU. Many people have stated they would be willing to take many risks to help out the cause. I have no reason to doubt anyone. But, I'm guessing most of us have not come anywhere near the danger she has.

Check her out dangling from makeshift gear for Greenpeace. She went to freaking CHINA to protest at the Olympics - that takes incredible courage and commitment. She was in genuine danger in both of these situations just like she was following Rand Paul around.

Lauren has traveled, been arrested, beaten and stomped. She has a concussion. I played a lot of sports, got concussions, torn ACL & MCL, ruptured Achilles tendon, dislocated fingers, broken ribs and more - you get the idea. I've been in real fights and gotten beaten up for standing up for myself at the time. Although I was not paid for it, I would still do it all again.

I hope someone gets to ask Lauren (hopefully Keith O.) if a concussion was worth impacting this election season in a way beyond what she could possibly have hoped for or imagined. My guess is she would say "HELL YES!!! ABSOLUTELY!!!"

Her actions say it all.

I do not think we are not going to see the last of this incredible young woman.

YOU GO GIRL!!!

52. And the Tea Partiers with Hitler signs and guns strapped on should likewise expect to be stomped?

And the town hollerers screaming over Congressional reps and burning them in effigy also deserved a good stomping?

And the abortion protesters with their bloody fetus pictures should likewise expect a solid beating?

And Joe Wilson "agitating" from the floor of Congress should have expected a boot on the face as well?

The double standard is the POINT. We have a set of laws and principles in this country that represent the idea that speech, no matter how unpopular, does not justify a violent response. We have one group of people abiding by these principles, and another group which has decided it is entitled to stomp a woman's head into a curb for carrying a FUCKING SIGN.

The only way to "get over it" is to decide whether we want our politicts determined by vigorous debate within the bounds of the law, or bloodshed.

Anyone who doesn't see a problem with one nonviolent protester being beaten down for "agitating" occupies the "bloodshed, please," side of the line.

51. The RW and Republicans in general court this violence. They seek it out. This is what they want.

Eventually, half-heartedly, the Republican establishment will disclaim violence. But they scream rhetoric that is calculated to incite it. They talk about "death panels" and "baby killers" and scream that the President is a liar and an illegitimate leader from the floor of Congress and make very, very sure that everyone is clear that it's important conservatives be ARMED at all times.

And a doctor will be shot. And a woman will be stomped. And a museum guard will be killed. An American terrorist will fly a plane into an I.R.S. buidling and a Republican will tell us he agrees with the sentiment. A militia will be formed to "practice" fighting the U.S. military.

And the entire time, they will continue to talk about the horrible threat to peace, not from these things, which are actually happening, but from "Marxists" and Muslims. They will talk about the "tryanny" of income tax and healthcare reform, while cheering an ideology of nonstop war and replacing the entire term "torture" with the mumbling euphemism, "enhanced interrogation" and carry on is if no one should notice.

And all of it is based on the notion that there is a group of entitled people in this country who "own" it, to the exclusion of the rest of us. Imagine if one of "theirs" was stomped. Or shot. Or blown up with a plane. Christ, two black guys yelling on a street corner sent them into paroxysms of fear and rage that Tea Party supporters in Alaska are STILL yapping about.

These people are feverishly massaging their rage glands, and winding themselves up to explode. And the Republicans are sitting back in the shadows and chuckling about it.

Edited on Thu Oct-28-10 04:39 PM by DFW
They know who uses it as their MO, they know what their politics are, and they know all too well
what happens if these people get into power. They also know that such people can get into power
through elections--all that is needed is for good people to turn a blind eye and do nothing.

We would all do well to remember what was needed to get them out of power.

Para convencer hay que persuadir. Y para persuadir necesitaríais algo
que os falta: razón y derecho en la lucha."

Proffitt is acting as an official representative of the campaign. That makes Paul responsible. Since Profitt was Paul's Bourbon County coordinator, Rand Paul will be held liable for Proffitt's actions. Looks like a big cash settlement in civil court beside a criminal indictment.

Yeah, I know, it's Alan Colmes.

But... One thing that's interesting about his show is that even though he's a liberal (or "liberal") talk show host, he gets on a bunch of right-wing stations. He also doesn't screen out right-wingers, so he gets dozens of right-wing lunatics calling him every evening. So it's a good opportunity to see the mentality of the teabagging right.

They were all hooting and hollering and cheering about the curbstomping, saying it was her fault for daring to use her First Amendment rights, and that Profitt and his thugs were heroes.. It was absolutely disgusting.
