Muslim family kicked off flight for dressing in clothes that indicated "some Muslim-type religion"

Someone at a Memphis airport thought Juan Williams was really up to something with his remarks about being fearful of people wearing "Muslim garb," and got an entire family kicked off a flight:

"My understanding is they were dressed in attire that would indicate some Muslim-type religion," said airport vice-president Scott Brockman.

What provoked the incident? Muslim-type people in Muslim garb using the bathroom:

"On taxi, the crew became concerned when a passenger exited the lavatory after an extended period of time and damage was found in the lavatory," said a Comair spokesperson in a written statement.

9. Alll those still flying, shave your heads.
Just as friends of cancer victims shave their heads in solidarity, it is time for us all to speak with Muslims, and suggest we "dress" in a way to get attention. If they are in agreement, then this solidarity will certainly press the point.

Better than a "march".

22. I love that - I'm doing it next time I fly!
There have been a couple of incidents in Canada with children's sports - girls being disqualified from martial-arts tournaments, for example, because of a hijab - and I remember thinking that if I was ever one of the girls who was set to win a match because my opponent was being disqualified for (essentially) her expression of her religion, I would show up in a hijab, too. The flying thing is the same idea.

27. Thank you! I know we can find all sorts of ways to promote solidarity... with all kinds of issues.
This is just one, and I invite you to think of... and post... others.

:yourock:

It beats just bitching about it on a forum. :hi:

Embracing my Indian heritage and all, as well as being comfy, still have been more careful. Edit to add that I really hate having to do so.

17. I found a couple places via ebay from Vancouver, BC
Out of the several I bought, only 1 was too stiff to wear even with washing. Pants and a tunic are what they are. Rather like pajamas at times, or can be very nice.

With my striking middle aged physique, it looks like pajamas I can wear if I have to run to the store.

Sometimes, I don't know what to think about these incidents because the stupidity involved is so astounding. Crap like this incident is why ethnic studies must be manditory in every school. Americans need to learn about other cultures and races pronto to stop idiotic and angering incidents like this.

16. Maybe the father of the family was in the toilet a long time
because it was already broken!

Not to mention - shouldn't the flight attendants have made certain everyone was seated and belted in before the plane pushed back from the gate?

I thought passengers weren't suppose to use the lavatory "on taxi?"

That photo! From "touch-down Jesus" to "Go west, young man, go west Adolph" (Assuming we're looking north...)

21. Wow, I guess it's a miracle I survived my flights to and from Morocco In April...
NYC direct to Casablanca and back on Royal Air Maroc - not only were there some passengers who seemed to be wearing Muslim garb - the pilot's name sounded foreign and the food was Halal! :eyes:

Note to the ignorant: Muslims fly on planes every day in every part of the world. And *gasp* sometimes you can't identifiy them by their "garb."

24. I thought about that too!
As an atheist, though, I didn't want to be offensive, either. I don't know if it would even be considered offensive if a non-Muslim wore a hijab in solidarity of civil rights. I suppose I'll need to get one to try it out!

28. Follow that temptation. That was my suggestion upthread. Like friends shaving their heads for
their friend who has cancer.

It's called "Solidarity", and it is strong.
