Appeals court spurns state's Chicken Littles

Immediately after an appeals court tossed out Arizona's xenophobic and unnecessary voter-registration law, Gov. Chicken Little and Secretary of State Cry Wolf sprang into action, releasing a joint sky-is-falling statement.

"The Ninth Circuit Court Appeals has struck down a simple, common sense protection approved by Arizona voters requiring that all individuals provide evidence of U.S. citizenship prior to registering to vote," said Gov. Jan Brewer and Secretary of State Ken Bennett. "This decision is an outrage and a slap in the face to all Arizonans who care about the integrity of their elections."

"This law has kept a lot of eligible people from voting," <Linda Brown, executive director of the Arizona Advocacy Network, which was a plaintiff in the Prop. 200 case> told me. "There is no evidence of fraud. The notion that people will risk their lives crossing the desert in order to decide between (state school superintendent candidates) Penny Kotterman and John Huppenthal is absurd."

Still, Brewer and Bennett plan to waste even more taxpayer money on the case, saying, "We will continue to pursue any and all legal remedies to prevent fraudulent voter registration in the State of Arizona."
