Fairmont police say the officer, Chad Sanow, was dispatched to the house fire about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The officer and a citizen assisting the officer were shot.
"They approached the residence and as they entered the driveway, they were ambushed by the gunman," Lt. Del Ellis with the Fairmont Police Dept. said.
Both were taken to the Fairmont Medical Center. The officer was later airlifted to St. Mary's in Rochester; police say he had been shot in the chest. "Last night he just about paid the ultimate price, but thank the Lord he's fine," Ellis explained.
About 11 p.m., authorities said a third person had been found dead near the home. A subsequent search of the property revealed that the person had sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Police also said there was no apparent danger to the community. The Sentinel of Fairmont says three fire trucks were on the scene.
Sanow and the citizen are listed in stable condition at the Rochester Hospital, according to authorities.
The Minnesota Bureau of the FBI is investigating the incident.
