A museum exhibit opening next month will feature the photos of people killed in Iraq or Afghanistan who have ties to Nebraska and western Iowa, a somber display meant to jar the public into remembering that American troops are still in two war zones, its creators say.

The exhibit, the brainchild of Bill and Evonne Williams, will open Nov. 14 at the Strategic Air and Space Museum with a public event at 1:30 p.m. Evonne Williams is the museum's acting director, and Bill Williams has organized numerous events for World War II veterans.

The World-Herald is a partner with the Williamses in presenting the exhibit. The exhibit makes use of photos and other content published by The World-Herald. The newspaper also helped the couple contact the families of those who have died.

The exhibit, “Remembering Our Fallen,” will stay at the museum for approximately two months and then travel the state in 2011.

Its first tour stop: the Capitol Rotunda, where it will be seen by thousands of visitors.

The couple hope the photo display will remind people of the cost of war as the Afghan conflict enters its tenth year. It is now the longest in American history, four months longer than the Vietnam War.

The exhibit's creators also hope it will preserve the memory of the 98 service members featured, who are fresh in the public's mind when they die but then fade from memory as the years pass.

1. But will the willfully ignorant fall for it and call it Patriotic?
Educating the public in this manner might lead for amplified calls to end this debacle.
