I emailed her office a pretty long time ago to voice my displeasure about her introducing legislation that would make pot brownies illegal, they replied this morning and sent me this:
Thank you for writing to express your opposition to the "Saving Kids From Dangerous Drugs Act of 2010." I appreciate the time you took to write, and I respect your opinion.
I believe drug abuse among youth in America is a serious problem. Drug dealers are increasingly manufacturing and marketing illegal drugs to minors. In March of 2006, law enforcement officials uncovered a drug operation in Oakland, California, which manufactured marijuana-laced candy and soft drinks that were packaged to resemble popular products like Jolly Ranchers, Milky Way, and Pop Tarts.
On January 15, 2009, I introduced the "Saving Kids From Dangerous Drugs Act of 2010" (S. 258). Generally, this legislation would make it unlawful for any adult to manufacture a Schedule I or II controlled substance that is: (1) combined with a candy product; (2) marketed or packaged to appear similar to a candy product; and (3) modified by flavoring or coloring with the intent to distribute, dispense, or sell the controlled substance to a minor. On July 29, 2010, the Senate passed S. 258, and it is currently awaiting action in the House of Representatives.
I understand you have concerns regarding the potential application of the "Saving Kids From Dangerous Drugs Act of 2010" to brownies containing medical marijuana consumed by patients under California's medical marijuana law. Please know that this legislation applies only to drug dealers who modify drugs to look like candy with the intent to sell them to minors. In addition, the legislation has an exception for controlled substances that have been altered at the direction of a doctor who is acting for a legitimate medical purpose.
I hope this helps you understand my point of view. I encourage you to continue to keep me informed on matters of importance to you. Should you have additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. staff at (202) 224-3841.
It sounds reasonable but I still don't trust her. And the title "saving kids from DANGEROUS drugs" really has me miffed.
