Kids Football Team Banned from Playoff
SEDALIA, MO. — A 5th grade football team was denied a chance to show off their skills after having an excellent season. The Sedalia Junior Outlaws were banned from the playoff games because they're too good! Now, the team's coach is speaking out.

The kids earned a spot in the playoffs after dominating their league. After being told they weren't allowed to play, the kids are heartbroken and coaches are confused. The team made a splash by going 6-0 in the regular season in the West Central Youth Football League.

"It's very exciting and a lot of hard work and preparation," said coach Ben Lyles. "After playing above expectation, it's hard to put into words."

The email said despite their 6-0 season, officials had talked to teams in the league and they didn't feel like they could be competitive with the Outlaws so they were asked not to participate in the playoffs.

These kids worked so hard and for what? It sounds like they need to create another division so the ones who are too good to play with the other teams, can play each other. Sounds to me like parents eating sour grapes.

5. They talked to the teams? Or adult spokespersons?
If these kids are legitimate, this is inexcusable.

7. I once coached a basketball team of 5th & 6th graders
We didn't lose a game for two years. Not because I was such a great coach but two kids on the team played division 1 college ball and two others including my own kid, played division 1 football. We were just lucky to have a team of very athletic kids. We didn't even recruit them, they were assigned randomly by means of a lottery.

Anyway before the playoffs the second year, we got reassigned to the 7th and 8th grade league because some of the parents of kids on the other teams bitched. Didn't matter, those kids were so good the older kids didn't stand a chance. Our team won the championship of the older league without a game even being close. Afterwards, some of the other coaches apologized for letting the parents of their team members influence the league's decision.

Needless to say, our kids didn't care. And I think the thing backfired on the league, because they had a lot of pissed off kids, coaches and parents from the older league when our kids won their league so easily.

Really teaches the kids a lot when adults pull some crap like this.

15. I had to really reread that first sentence - I was pretty surprised at first to
hear of 5th/6th graders playing Division 1 sports. But eventually I realized you meant later... :)

I agree - the league in the OP pulled a really stupid move. I wonder how the kids on the other teams feel; as much as everyone hates to lose they'd probably feel better about 2nd to a dominating team than to get 1st after something like this. And whatever team does win will probably get an earful from the excluded players every time they meet...

16. HAA! he was on with stephanie miller today, and I changed channels
http://www.examiner.com/public-education-in-chicago/chicago-arne-duncan-presided-over-a-schools-grade-changing-scandal

''Duncan misleads, manipulates, and lies through his oversized Colgate smile, uttering educations generalities that any novice PTA president can produce. What else can you conclude after months of revisionist reports have come out refuting, denying, and negating the phony school reform that catapulted this sociology major into the White House as an ‘education expert?’

He never taught school, and you cannot get a principal’s certificate in Illinois without teaching a minimum of two years; so he has never run a school.''

11. Figure out how much the season cost. Incl. parents washing uniforms,...
...cost of running the kids to practice and games. Every last quartered orange.

Now send the bill for a "wasted" season to those who made the descision to exclude.

12. Yeah, exactly. These kids worked hard to achieve something and then it's
yanked away. Now they'll wonder why kids aren't motivated.
