1. What I think Ed, Keith et al should do is to simply provide
some examples of Rightwing (Fox) facts as spouted by Beck, Hannity et al, then challenge Jon to provide similar examples from those on the left that he named.

Lies V Facts is the difference. I'm sorry he failed to understand that.

4. I was disappointed Rachel backed Stewart last night
Surely she doesn't think Keith, at least, is the same thing as Beck or Hannity.

To use Stewart's driving metaphor, it's impossible to believe we can be in a culture in which "you go....now I go...and now you go" when the other side is driving blind with its foot on the gas pedal.

42. Why are you so intent on comparing Keith and Ed to Fox?
That wasn't Jon's point at all. He was saying that hyperbole and sensationalism are corrosive to our national dialogue. Keith and Ed were included in the montage because at times they have been guilty of using hyperbole and sensationalism. Jon wasn't saying, "Oh my God! Keith and Ed use hyperbole so they are the exact same as Beck!!!". He was saying "The use of hyperbole and sensationalism in the 24/7 cable media is destructive to our country and we should stop it."

10. Cognitive dissonance
Jon was not making an apples to apples comparison, he was showing angry people screaming at the camera. This is what Jon is complaining about. Stop screaming, start solving. This is how he brought down Tucker Carlson and Crossfire. He's making the exact same point. That Ed, Keith, etc are taking it so personal points to their own egos. Nobody likes to be called out, but what they are not "getting" is that Jon is pointing out specific behavior, not the veracity of their statements.

And I say this as someone who is angry at Jon for his treatment of Obama, especially considering Obama embodies the behavior Jon seems to want from the media.

I guess nobody gets what they want. :)

37. war is also a playground for propaganda for a lazy media
as we learned in Iraq. Our media sensationalized the idea of weapons of mass destruction to the point of absurdity (Yes, Iraq is going to attack the US and hope it is not wiped off the map??, OK). There are plenty of ways sensationalism can be used to screw up the truth, and get people killed. Did we need a counterbalance, yes, but I do not believe that the counter-argument is just screaming louder than the guy before you. You don't win any hearts or minds that way, you preach to your own choir and piss off any other choirs in the vicinity.

35. Jon is not dictating squat
Edited on Mon Nov-01-10 12:55 PM by dave29
he is asking that people "settle" down a bit in their discourse. He does not have the power to make them stop, or get them fired. That is the call of their bosses. He does not call, himself, for them to be fired, but to be fair minded and reasonable. Again, nothing horrible about that. And he does this, and has done this, via satire, for years and years. If all these folks lost their job, Jon would not have one. Still, does not stop him from saying his peace, and I respect that, as much as I find him hypocritical for attacking Obama for being fair minded and reasonable and not screaming at the top of his lungs at the Republicans.

That any pundits take such great offense is more about them than Jon. I've watched Jon dissect many a Republican without raising his voice, and both folks leaving with a smile on their face, even though the Republican knew he just got his ass handed to him. Jon knows that the way to win an argument is through persuasion, not screaming.

is a secret, muslim, nazi, socialist, anti-christ are going to settle down anytime soon? Or, that we on the left shouldn't call them on their lunacy, and instead pretend they have valid points?

As I've said MLK didn't "settle down" and "listen" to the other side. He didn't invite the KKK to a calm discussion. Had he done so, we'd still be "talking" about civil rights and there would be no President Obama.

I agree that Stewart is gifted. He's also a comedian and his job is to keep things a bit light. That said, I ask how many people would tune in to his show if everyone on T.V. were just like him?

They were not the sole targets. Jon was not and has not been credited with dictating who gets to appear on cable news. He was pointing out that non-stop sensationalism and hyperbole from the media is destructive to our country's political discussion.

He did not say Keith = Beck. He was establishing that the 24/7 cable media thrives on outrage for the purpose of ratings and the actual outcome of that outrage is secondary.

I think it's a nice thought that we can reason with Beck, Limbaugh, Palin and others. When Stewart is able to calm down that crowd, with his calls for reason, I'll support the notion that we on the left should calm down as well.

As for me, I'm glad that we FINALLY have an answer to Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, with Ed, Keith, Grayson and others. I'm sorry some find answering the R/W, destructive.

"Jon is pointing out specific behavior, not the veracity of their statements." Precisely.

And as for the "we need to scream to be heard because they're screaming" - Rachel Maddow was not included in that video montage for a reason.

Because she can get the point across effectively *without screaming.*

I've seen people here mention before that Ed is not their cup of tea because he reminds them too much of Rush Limbaugh. Does that mean those people think he's the same as Rush? Of course not. His delivery and style, however, reminds these folks of Rush. They aren't against what he's saying, but how he says it. And so they turn the dial to Thom Hartmann, or Mike Malloy, or whoever.

I do think that Jon's "you go, then I go" example is a bit too idealistic for the current political climate, but I can respect it because it's high-minded. But it's still unrealistic.

I can't believe DUers are getting all worked up, being obnoxious and calling each other names because they disagree with Keith and Ed's delivery style. Nowhere did these people say they disagreed with the content, or that they were huge fans of Jon to the exclusion of Keith and/or Ed. I don't think that's what Jon was getting at, either.

If you love Ed or Keith, fine. If you don't, that's okay too. You can love Jon in addition to Ed and/or Keith. Different strokes for different folks. We're all on the same team here.

49. Fixed News is well known for its lies & propaganda. It's got a bad reputation.
Neither Keith or Ed lie. They don't have to -- the thugs' dishonesty & outrageous behavior write the news for them. And since Keith & Ed are among the few who actually report what's really going on (ahem...the Fourth Estate has left the building), I can't blame them for one second for being occasionally outraged. I've seen Rachael flabbergasted a few times, too. Because the thugs are that outrageous!

I love Jon for all the extraordinary work he's done since we entered the Twilight Zone & for the brilliant, successful rally he organized, but he made a mistake when he lumped in two earnest newsmen -- without whom we would have had nowhere to turn for hope -- with a "news network" that has to lie to its viewers because they can't seem to knock down the Democrats with the truth.

Further, Keith prides himself with his integrity. Do you watch his show at all? He gave a graduation commencement at Cornell, his alma mater, years ago in which he talked about the direction he saw the news going. He was one news person who refused to toe the corporate line & do what all the other news was doing at the time: shallow, nonstop coverage of President Clinton. Keith has done touching stories about his mother & father, weaving their health problems into the reasons a national health care system is so vital.

I love Jon Stewart for the magnificent work he's done, but I think he needs to right the wrong he's done to both Keith & Ed. These two guys do not lie or spread propaganda to their viewers.

29. Left wing talk is mostly accurate, it also keeps our base engaged.
Edited on Mon Nov-01-10 01:00 PM by MissMarple
The primary purpose on the right to obfuscate and maintain fear levels with propaganda, as we know. The left wing counters that but only people on the left believe them, consequently they tend to cater to the left. So, we remain divided. I think breaking through the noise machine that shields the righties from reality will take a true calamity. I wonder how long the Nazi fear machine would have remained viable if they had won. Perhaps that would have been a moot point, which is what I'm guessing the corportists are counting on. Me, I still have faith in the overall decency of the American people. We will prevail, but it may not be easy or pretty. We have done this before. The government actually backed the factory and mine owners when workers first tried to unionize. Haymarket is a case in point. We have moved past that, sadly, too many of us have forgotten.

Civics and history...we have to find better ways to teach them. Without them the sciences become the tools of the corporations.
Damn, I'm moderate. How far we have fallen for me to say that.

53. Both sides DO do it
Maybe not to the same degree, but both sides are guilty of over the top bullshit. The only difference is that our side gets it right.

54. having a network of propaganda and rw talk show is a HUGE difference from "both" sides
though i have heard KO not tell all the story to lean story (which i did NOT like being informed and knowing he did this) is a big difference from what fox and rw mouths do. and the same in the political realm. though i hear what stewart is saying, he has his own contradiction. in interview with obama he called obama out for doing exactly what he demanded politicians do at the rally, yet in the interview did exactly what he criticizes.

but the over all message of the rally, and the rally itself was good.

but there is no way be can compare "both sides".

58. Yup...and that might be because?
Fox has been on about FIFTEEN years longer than any equivalently "left" network or show and because a pro-corporate right wing message dovetails better with M$M corporate goals?...That alone argues against some bullshit stance of "equivalence" by Stewart or anyone else.
