Rep. Todd Akin: The Pilgrims Came To America To Flee ‘Unbiblical’ Socialism In The 1620′s

AKIN: It might be helpful to think back and say, there’s more to Thanksgiving than the Pilgrims. They were a group of people who were willing to change the system, to think of different ideas. They came here and separated civil and church governments. They came here and created the model of a written constitution, the idea that the government should be the servant of the people. <…> They came here with the idea that after trying socialism that it wasn’t going to work. They realized that it was unbiblical, that it was a form of theft, so they pitched socialism out. They learned that in the early 1620’s.

>>>>>SNIP>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Tell what in England and the Neatherlands was socialized?! It was like it pretty much now. The rich tramping on the the poor. Hey Akin take a look at your fellow rich elite and Corporate friends and how they treat the average JOE or in your case the people you ignore!

3. I read this as umbilical socialism...in any case, talk about brain-dead...
you'd at least think he'd talk about how they wanted to found a Christian country, which is BS, but is the standard BS from teabaggers.

5. very good suggestion... must pass history test
before being put in position of making rules and laws for how I live!

Rep. Akin is confused. The pilgrims left Europe and came to this land, to escape the same stuff that fundamentalist Christians are trying to foist on us today (well, sort of)...

6. They'd only argue the version of history that doesn't suit them is inaccurate and wrong.

They interpret history to their needs.

Example: They argue against Supreme Court interpretations that establish law because the case wasn't decided on "original intent" of the drafters of the Constitution.

11. And a drug test. And a full investigation into their background. And a credit check.
And an independent psychiatrist/psychologist evaluation of their mental state. And successful passage through a TSA screening.

Not that I don't think most of them wouldn't pass -- I just want to see the bastards in Washington put through the same hoops they so merrily legislate to put everybody else through.

9. "The Pilgrims were fleeing from Robin Hood"
"He was stealing too much from the rich, and giving too much to the poor, so the Pilgrims decided they'd had enough of England, and they went to Holland. But the Dutch King, William the Orange, was actually the English king in disguise, so the Pilgrims said, "Where can we go where we can get away from all this Marxist-Maoist-Leninist social-ism, where it will be every man for himself, the way Our Lord intended? After all, did He not say, "It's real easy for a rich man to get into Heaven, verily easier than it is for poor folks, that's for sure"?" So they set sail on a three-hour tour. But the weather started getting rough, and the tiny ship was tossed, if not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Mayflower would be lost. The Mayflower would be lost. The ship went aground on the shore of some uncharted desert land, with Miles Standish, the Skipper, too, John Alden, and his wife. Priscilla, and the rest, arrived in the New World, where they ate a lot of food, and everything was just fine and dandy."*

12. That sure clears things up
All this time I thought the Pilgrims came to Plymouth in 1620 to get away from the Great Irish Potato Famine of 1845.
