Texas grandmother sweeps streets of Washington as punishment for protest

Woman arrested last year for crossing police line.

By Gerry Smith / Austin American-Statesman

Diane Baker's voice was barely audible above the rumble of the trash can she pushed down the sidewalk. But her actions tended to speak louder, anyway.

Four months ago, Baker was one of 71 people arrested during a protest in Washington for crossing a police line to sit on the steps of a Senate office building.

As punishment, the 60-year-old was sentenced to sweep the streets of the nation's capital for eight cold, blustery hours Tuesday.

bush and company should be locked up and yet he is treated like a star at the stock exchange today because he gives the filthy rich tons of money and then treats decent hard working people like trash because she stood up for her rights

9. I bet she declined to pay the fine
I know when I was arrested for basically the same thing protesting GWI, I refused to pay the fine stating it was my constitutional right to protest

I did agree to do a bunch of hours community service, however, to stay out of jail. I ended up setting up the data base for the Adult Literacy program at the county library. It was a great org and I ended up staying as a volunteer after my "time" was done.

11. Maybe she couldn't afford to pay. Just like a bushitler to throw her out in the cold,
specially since she's over 65.

10. That reminds me the story of the nuns who protested
at the missle silo. They were also sentenced to community service.
They were NUNS, hellloo!

15. Well, sweeping can have funny effects

OBSW

In some circles, a woman "claims" a room by sweeping it. She is then in control of the energies of the space she has swept.

This left me with a powerful image of Baker "cleaning up" Washington.

Maybe a bunch of women need to head up to Washington with our brooms....
