Now, everybody has 17,000+. I remember when Keph hit 10,000 (RIP, Keph). That was a big deal.

We used to run a DUer through a 666 gamut - not any more. DU was a country road; now it is a suburban strip mall with way more heat than light. As a May 2001 initiate (along with Will Pitt), I miss the old days and the early Bu$h years (from a civility point of view).

But - again - I salute my old friends Skinner, Earl G, and Elad for the best damn LIBERAL website that I have yet found. And, like good pilots - Sully comes to mind - they have this ship under fairly good control.

I remember when major post levels and even birthdays were remembered regularly. When Keph was a one-man LBN (and he surely was). That more intimate community was nice, but, my how we've grown. We even get quoted by the "big guys" now on occasion. For all its difficulties, DU thrives.

7. I've seen some people reach 1000 posts in just a month,
so that "1000" posts that we see by a DUer's name isn't really a good indicator of how long they have been here.

I first arrived in 2001 (under another name)--right after the 2000 election debacle.

It's a good place to learn and be enlightened.:dem:

I remember when I joined the grassy knoll society and I was thrilled to reach the 700 club. Wonderful memories. :hi:

22. I was steady climbing
It was difficult. Back then, you didn't dare step into an argument without your reputable sources lest you be castigated by your peers.
Nowadays, not so much.
I earned my 1000th post during the Terri Schiavo debacle.

32. That's a fact about the sources.
I feel like that went out during the 2008 primaries. That's when opinions started taking over facts in debates here. :(

but I see people saying "look it up. I'm not doing your work for you" after they make a specious claim. That would *never* fly in the olden days.

21. I had the help of three beat-poet fire lookouts from the 50s!
Kerouac, Whalen, and Snyder (Gary Snyder - age 80 - is the only one still alive). In fact, those three - along with some other Southern writers we have discussed (Warren, Faulkner, Welty, O'Connor, etc) - got me through a combat tour in the 'Nam and some crazy corporate flying (Ken Lay) and an airline captain gig that ended on 9/10/2001.

18. Some statistics that would be interesting to know:
1. Who got to 1k posts the fastest? (maybe even a top ten list).
2. On average, how long does it take DUers to hit 1k posts?
3. A chance to get a private message letting each of us know how long it took us to get 1k posts (for those of us who do have 1k posts).
4. What percentage of DU has 1k+ posts.
5. Whatever happened to NewYawker99? How is she doing these days? She is missed.
6. Whatever happened to the "700 club?"

19. Indeed.
Posts were longer, and more thought out when the board first started, IMO. Now people either post something ridiculously short, or post a tome that takes a morning to read, though the vast majority of posts seem to be impulsive cliches. Anyway, my point is that I suspect that it takes much less time to get to 1000 posts now than during DU's first years.

And far fewer forums.

Maybe a good 10th Anniversary gift from the Admins would be some snapshots from the early days.

39. You can check out almost 800
Pages of DU Past for yourself via the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive: http://web.archive.org/web/20080111013650/http://www.democraticunderground.com/

The dates are very random, chosen by I-know-not-what criteria, but not dates that we probably would have chosen to archive for ourselves. For instance, we probably would had chosen to archive 1/20/09, but we only have four dates archived in '09 from July to October. And none for 2010. But it's still an interesting walk through memory lane.

BTW, glad you liked these snapshots, but OT, some of my other other snapshots include wildfires and a good dog. Which I'm only including because I've so enjoyed your photos of the same. :hi:

Like that old logo with the "typewriter" font!

And all those forums with the same 3 moderators - Skinner, Elad and EarlG!

Back then, I used to check in only for the Top Ten list. But then I saw the profanity-laced forum topics and thought, hey, this is a happening place.

42. I just clicked on a profile that shows nearly 30,000 posts since ec 2007.
That's a huge daily average, and makes me wonder if that sort of poster is retired with nothing else to do, or posting from work, or simply has no life.

Many of the posts show that some research was involved, so that makes the time per post go up.
