Mary Cheney: Blitzer's questioning "over the line" but Dobson "entitled to his opinion".
Edited on Thu Feb-01-07 01:19 AM by gatorboy
It's as if she's STILL trying to collect brownie points from her daddy's buddies that think she's an abomination. Has she ever told THEM to kiss her ass?

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/31/us/31cnd-cheney.html?_r=1&hp&ex=1170306000&en=2f756d3153c4c19d&ei=5094&partner=homepage&oref=slogin

Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, today for the first time publicly defended her decision to become pregnant and asserted that same-sex couples are equally capable of raising children as heterosexual couples.

“When Heather and I decided to have a baby, I knew it wasn’t going to be the most popular decision,” Ms. Cheney said, referring to her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe. She then gestured to her middle — any bulge disguised by a boxy jacket — and asserted: “This is a baby. This is a blessing from God. It is not a political statement. It is not a prop to be used in a debate, on either side of a political issue. It is my child.”

<snip>

Ms. Cheney said in a brief interview after the panel that she was not speaking for her father, but that when she saw the interview, she also felt Mr. Blitzer had crossed a line. “He was trying to get a rise out of my father,” she said.

<snip>

She said Mr. Dobson was entitled to his opinion, “but he’s not someone whose endorsement I have ever drastically sought.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Well it's obvious he'd never give it. But it's nice to know that she can still be understanding when it comes to her dad's bigoted pals.

Liberals that actually fight for her rights? Not so much.

2. How dare someone question hypocrisy!
Don't forget: As long as Dubya and Dick are running the show, nothing about them is ever supposed to be questioned.

Lest one forgets this lesson, ask Helen Thomas about the consequences.

4. Cheney/W/Rove fought like hell for the religious right's votes
And the hatred of gays/lesbians was #1 on their agenda to tout to the RR. What a bunch of lying sacks of crap.

They totally used the religious right.

5. My question is: Is Mary Cheney being intentionally obtuse
or is she just that clueless?

Maybe she can tell me why her child gets to be just a child, but liberal and progressive gay families have to be demonized and railed against, and yes--used as a prop--by the Republicans for political gain?

18. Try Opportunist
People will do and say anything for money and power, even if they're a member of a disenfranchised group. For people like Mary Cheney, they have no sympathy for anyone else in their group. They stand side by side with people who hate them just as long as they get money and power.

8. Yeah, right--children who are conceived by AI
aren't blessings from God as much as children conceived through sex.

:wtf:

10. Mary Cheney lives in an insulated world
Where money and Daddy's position protects her from the damage caused by Daddy's supporters and any policies wrought by Daddy's appeals to haters for political gain...whereas the rest of the GLBT community have no such insulation to protect them. So from Mary's sitting-pretty vantage point, she attacks those who would point out the hypocrisy of it all.

So she can say -

“This is a baby. This is a blessing from God. It is not a political statement. It is not a prop to be used in a debate, on either side of a political issue. It is my child.”

and actually believe it when she says it....because the same bigots that attack the GLBT community at large, for the exact same issue - having/raising children - can't really touch Mary.

So those things are true for her. Yes, they should be true for everyone....but that's just not the reality for the rest of GLBT community.

Oh, she is still considered hell-bound by those bigots and she still doesn't have full civil rights - but she's protected from the majority of gross hardships those things bring everyone else.

No court is ever going to attempt to take her child away from her because she's a lesbian.

Denial of benefits isn't a consideration - when you have the money to furnish your own health care and such, that a company refuses to recognize same-sex benefits is of little practical consequence to you personally.

No hospital is going to refuse her partner entrance into the ICU in the event of grave illness.

No Realtor is going to refuse to rent or sell to her.

Her partner will enjoy the benefits of Mary's connections and advantages.

Discrimination against the GLBT community isn't going to be much of a blip on Mary Cheney's radar - she's insulated. She's protected from it.

Instead of using her advantage to further the cause of equality she pretends to live as if there is nothing special about her circumstances.

I saw the Blitzer/Cheney interview and Blitzer was indeed trying to get a rise out of Cheney - from his questions you could tell Blitzer wanted Cheney to address how he can accept and encourage the support of homophobic bigots on the right when his own daughter is a lesbian

Cheney refused to address the issue ...but not because Cheney thought Blitzer was out of line for asking personal quesitons...Cheney doesn't think anyone has the right to ask him about anything at all about his politics...even when his politics hurt other people. To Cheney's thinking, it's OK if the GLBT community is discriminated against...because his daughter is protected from that and it's just not an issue for his family.
