Satire is the mark of a decadent era. In such times, the most brilliant citizens wield words with choking hilarity, illustrating the decay of human values with penetrating insight and providing the first, most important weapon of those who would save a culture from its own most hideous members: ridicule. During the several centuries that marked the death of the Roman Republic and the birth of the Empire, piercing wits such as Lucilius, Petronius, Martial, and Juvenal poked fun at politicians, rich citizens, rivals, and anyone well-known and self-important
Indeed, the very vocabulary of satire, and of humor in general, is that of an attack: poking fun, piercing wit, penetrating insight, devastatingly funny, cutting humor, killing joke. When the most intelligent and hilarious humorists and audiences turn their attention to public affairs, one may be sure that they are howling for a certain kind of blood – and almost invariably they deserve to drink it from goblets.

In times of widespread deceit, consider the possible necessity of taking suggestions to their logical conclusion. Laughter among primates can sometimes be a sign of attack, in a very literal way. How does a child react when the children around him are all laughing but he isn’t? The hooting and chuckling of primates before they start slinging shit at each other serve a purpose – the same purpose as the chanting and yelling of athletes in the locker room just before a big, nasty, bone-crushing football game. The derided party is the enemy. Laughter is an attack. Humor is the tool that the perceptive use to point out injustice. The class clown is the most important and undervalued member of the academic world. He understands, on an instinctive level, the tyranny of the school system and the source of its power to crush spirits and regiment imaginations. And his antics are a very real attack upon the illegitimate authority wielded by many (but far from all) of the teachers employed by the soulless system of mass anaesthesia that passes for education in our modern world
Someone is trying to send you a message. Some targets of satire are so richly guilty that what may seem their mere absurdity is in actuality something that is tantamount to treason against the human species. Since there are certain things everyone requires, attempting to shield people from being able to attain some of those things is an aggressive act. And aggressive acts require defense and counterattack.
