HOUSTON - Oil giant Exxon Mobil Corp. on Thursday posted the largest annual profit by a U.S. company -- $39.5 billion -- even as earnings for the last quarter of 2006 declined 4 percent.

The 2006 profit topped Exxon Mobil's own previous record of $36.13 billion set in 2005.

Revenue at the world's largest publicly traded oil company rose to $377.64 billion for the year, surpassing the record $370.68 billion Exxon posted in 2005.

1. They really needed those billions in tax breaks, eh?
I wonder if Bush or Cheney will end up on the board of ExxonMobil once they leave office?

13. But will anyone hold GOP contributor Exxon/Mobil responsible for the Republicans? Noooooo
When people finally hold GOP contributors for the detrimental Republican actions over the last 12 years, then perhaps we will get progressive legislation passed.

5. Poor Exxon.
I feel bad that they did not make 40 billion. C'mon people buy more gas and oil from them.

6. Shell reports record $25 billion profit.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6319577.stm

Shell said output during the final quarter reached 3.645 million barrels of oil equivalent a day, compared with 3.5 million a year ago.

"In 2006, we saw good operational and financial performance in Shell. Our exploration strategy is paying off, " said chief executive Jeroen van der Veer.

"Hydrocarbon production was underpinned by the production re-start from the Mars platform in the USA, growth in LNG and deep water Nigeria."

Mr van der Veer added: "We have agreed to partner with Gazprom in Sakhalin-2, and are progressing with the proposal to acquire the minority shareholding in Shell Canada".

7. We aught to nationalize the oil industry and compel it to work at cost.
Or at the very least, institute a heavy windfall profits tax and send the revenue from it back to the people who are paying at the pump. These crooks are bleeding people dry.

8. Great idea
Let's have the oil industry nationalized. It will be a model corp, headed by savy administrators appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, working for the general welfare of all the people, streamelined and efficient; just like the Post Office and the DMV.

11. I think I am becoming schizophrenic. I get mad at Exxon for
making too much money, right after I have gotten mad at Ford for losing too much money. Maybe we need a Profit Regulation Board, so that companies don't make too much money or lose too much money and endanger jobs.

12. There is a difference in remaining competitive and downright gouging
The thing that irks me about Exxon, is that they are not reinvesting in the infrastructure.
They will let it collapse and then expect the Federal Government to subsidize it.
As far as Ford...you cannot continue to build gashogs in this economy and during this war.
You just can't.
That is poor business practice.
