Santiago de Chile, March 10 ABN.- The Defense Ministers of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) will try on Tuesday to strengthen the mutual regional trust, through dialog and integration.
Representatives of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela were received at the La Moneda presidential palace, in Chile, by President Michelle Bachelet, whose country exerts the pro tempore chair of the union.
Host Defense Minister, Jose Goñi, stated that the new South American Council Defense does not expect to create a military force as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), but to raise an alliance that strengthens the mutual trust through integration, dialog and cooperation in matters of defense.
He added that the Defense Council intends to consolidate Latin America a space for peace, a base for democratic stability and the integral development of the nations.
“The first main merit is the creation of a platform for encounter and exchange of experiences that will allow us to talk, coordinate and work in matters of safety abroad in a different level,” Goñi explained.
The Council, which will meet once a year, held the first meeting last Monday, in which took part vice ministers and delegates. Meanwhile, the ministers held private bilateral meetings.
Unasur 12 ministers will have a full meeting this Tuesday, after they pay homage to the memorial of Liberator Bernardo O'Higgins.
The agenda created by the vice minister embraces matters as defense, military cooperation, humanitarian actions and peace operations, industry and defense technology, and training.
