FLASH!! Possible Spy Case in Cuba Possibly Related to Lage, Perez Roque and Remirez?
Attorney Jose Pertierra is circulating this so I put credence in the allegations. Karen Wald just sent it out on her list and is the origin of the provocative Subject line. It's in Spanish but, will be on lookout for an English version. Any ace translators want to take a crack. My Spanish could be a whole lot better; I figure every word and nuance is critical to the overall understanding.

1. So, Hernandez may be a spy for Spain and he has clandestine
recordings of the three "retirees" discussing pushing Raul out? Is that close? :wow:

3. Yep, you are on it. and the jokes about Fidel's age and illness . . .
didn't help either. i have Machetera on the phone translating the article. the article says the NYT had an article on monday about this, but I can't find it.

The worst thing about this is that it comes just before the summit of americas and any big news out of Cuba gets warped by media and think tanks.

5. Well, how surprising is this, really? It would be surprising if no one
had such a plan or wish. That's what I meant when I said that hopefully Raul has his own Raul to watch his back.

Even the right wing nutcase US anti-Castro "intelligence" experts have always regarded Raul with respect for his ability to predict and to manage threats.

2. Magbana, NYT wrote about this earlier this week

Pérez Roque to the left of Raul Castro, Lage to the right.

Conrado Hernández

Snips:

Cuban officials said that Mr. Pérez Roque and Mr. Lage had become too visible and that they had conveyed to foreign politicians false expectations about how the country would change and who would be in control of its direction. The officials declined to be more specific.

The men were also involved socially with a Cuban named Conrado Hernández, who was surreptitiously recording their conversations during regular parties at his ranch in Matanzas. Some of those recorded conversations, which Cuban officials recently discovered, included acerbic criticism and off-color jokes about various government leaders, including Fidel and Raúl Castro.

Mr. Hernández, who served as the liaison on the island between the Cuban government and business interests in the Basque region of Spain, has been detained for over a month, Cuban officials said, because he was supposedly passing the recordings to Spanish intelligence officials, a claim that the Spanish Embassy in Cuba adamantly denies.

7. I was wondering about Urbina too.

I have never seen his byline, but then I don't read the NYT much. He seems to be quite a prolific writer.

Did find that he is based in Washington. But that amplifies the question you raised. Notice the dateline on the article is Havana. Normally a reporter is not allowed to use a dateline if he/she is not writing DIRECTLY from that dateline. It's an old journalistic ethic. I seriously doubt the Urbina was in Havana this past Monday.

So where did Urbina get his info. Good good question.

9. Mendacity. The NYTs Public Editor doesn't answer his mail
so I don't see how to find out without calling the news desk or something.

Iirc, the NYTs is not above sitting on stories to time them. (cough)
