The Second International Youth Meeting in Solidarity with the Cuban Five began on Monday in Havana with the presence of 140 young people from some 40 countries.
At the meeting, Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcón explained that the US government can release the five Cubans antiterrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned in the United States right now, and that it would only take the signature of US President Barack Obama to end this struggle and stop the injustice committed against them.
Alarcón said that Obama was not president when Ramón Labañino, René González, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando González were imprisoned in 1998; but he is now and, therefore, has the power to set them free.
Following the so famous slogan “Yes, we can” used by Obama himself during his electoral campaign, he can end up this injustice, the president of the Cuban Parliament said.
Alarcón said that during the competition for the White House, Obama promised to change and put an end to arbitrary acts and illegalities committed by his predecessor George W. Bush in his war against terror. “This is a good chance to change,” he said.
To solve this, neither a law nor a negotiation with the Congress is necessary, but to sign an instruction, Alarcón pointed out.
He explained that this was what the US president recently did with two Americans ex-members of the American Israel Public Action Committee, accused of espionage for compiling secret reports from the Pentagon to hand them in to Israel.
Alarcón explained that three of the five Cuban antiterrorists —Gerardo, Antonio and Ramón— were processed under this same charge, and that although in the case of the two Americans Washington was able to prove their accusation, the result was different in the case of the Cuban Five because the district attorney’s office was not able to prove their lies due to lack of evidences.
Therefore, Washington could withdraw the charges against our antiterrorist fighters, with a lot more reason. Alarcón also said that Obama can do other things like putting terrorist Posada Carriles in jail or sending him to Venezuela, a country that has been requesting his extradition for years to try him for his crimes.
In the conversation with representatives of more than 80 youth organizations worldwide, the president of the Cuban Parliament spoke once again about the importance of reaching the US people through the mass media because once they know about the case, it will be more difficult for Washington not to act.
Also present at the meeting were Julio Martínez, first secretary of the Young Communist League, and relatives of the Cuban Five.
On Tuesday, participants to the Second International Youth Meeting in Solidarity with the Cuban Five will take part in a Tribunal against Terrorism at Havana’s Anti-imperialist Tribune and then, they will hold an Interactive Forum in the Central Computer Center to spread the information about the Cuban Five through Internet.
