Cuban Volunteers Return from Honduras

HAVANA, Cuba, July 10 (acn) More than 80 Cuban education and sports
workers, who were offering their services in Honduras, returned to the
Caribbean nation on Thursday because of accusations against them by the
de facto regime of this Central American country that appear to be aimed
at encouraging attacks against these volunteers.
“We know you faced many dangers and traveled long distances during
the evacuation but, still, you remained firm and dignified,” said Cuban
Education Minister Elsa Velazquez, who welcomed the Cuban personnel at
Havana’s Jose Marti International airport.
According to Granma newspaper, the group is comprised of pedagogues,
three specialists from the Cuban Institute of Sports, Physical Education
and Recreation (INDER) and two from the Ministry of the Sugar Industry.
On behalf of the Cuban collaborators, Daysi Herrera Perez expressed
their willingness to go back to Honduras to finish their work and to sow
the seeds of knowledge among the Honduran people. “They deserve it,” she
said.
“Fidel, Raul and the Party (Cuban Communist Party) should know that
we never lost our nerve. We remained firm, willing to work and act in
accordance with the high reputation of our Homeland,” she stressed.
Meanwhile, a memorandum released by the Cuban embassy in Tegucigalpa
explains that the Cuban medical and paramedical personnel will stay in
Honduras unless they are requested to leave the country.

1. Article contributed by Jane Franklin say 143 Volunteers Leave Honduras
Cuba withdraws 143 volunteers from Honduras

Translation: "Cuba withdraws 143 volunteers from Honduras." Medical and paramedical personnel will remain, but Cubans working in the National Literacy Campaign will leave because of accusations against them by Honduran Armed Forces -- accusations that appear to be aimed at encouraging attacks against the teachers. Below is the official notice from the Cuban Embassy in Tegucigalpa.

Remember: In October 1981 two Cuban teachers, Pedro Pablo Rivera Cue and Bbaro Rodriguez, along with two Nicaraguan peasants were assassinated in Nicaragua as the contras waged their U.S.-sponsored war to overthrow the Sandinistas. Two months later another Cuban teacher, Aguedo Morales Reina, was assassinated. This kind of terrorism forced Cuba to withdrraw teachers in order not to endanger them or the Nicaraguans who were learning how to read.

Twenty years earlier young Cuban teachers in the Literacy Campaign were murdered by right-wing Cubans. Who attacks teachers? Who is afraid of an educated people?

2. Look at all the good this twisted dwarf is doing for Honduras already.
Good to know they've not lost any of their members yet.

That country is going to start feeling very tiny soon when the people realize all they've got to look forward to is the invasive brutal rule by a few dried up old hate-filled ugly bastards and a military on hand to carry out their executions.

3. It takes serious threats to make Cubans leave.
Hi :hi:

Some of the bravest and most caring professionals I know are Cuban Cubans. At great risk of life and limb they continue forward with dedication.

Haven't had much time for DUing during the Honduran coup because I'm getting ready to leave on a surgical mission to Nicaragua at the end of the week, and I'm really looking forward to seeing and working with some of these fine Cubans. I'm sure I'll be hearing some news from the other side while I'm there. There's rarely a moment of rest on these trips but if I hear anything big I'll try to let y'all know.

4. Mika! great to hear from you. Wondered where you had been.
That's terrific you are heading to Nicaragua to do medical work. Please take care of yourself and, yes, if you get a moment write to let us know how you are doing. Please tell the Cubans that there is a whole network of people here who revere them for their noble work.

6. Safe travel coming and going to you, Mika. Your presence and caring will bring help
to people who truly need it.

Now more than ever before, people need to see GOOD people from the States, too! Especially in places like battered Nicaragua.

Also wondered what had happened to you. Glad to hear you're o.k. yourself.

Anything you observe while you're there would easily become food for thought for those who read your comments.

Your trip will be a gift to others, you can be sure. (That is if you don't become a grubby, snotty, supercilious, anal, socially alienated, royal pain when you get there.)

8. I recommended this earlier, and some winger has voided my vote!
Now I can't vote for it again, of course. The system keeps track!

I am very aware the Latin America watching DU'ers, enthusiasts wouldn't unrec this. It leaves a VERY limited number who would.
