Costa Rica to withdraw Honduran diplomats' accreditation

SAN JOSE, Aug 18, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Costa Rican government announced on Tuesday that it would disavow Honduran ambassadress Koritza Suazo, as it was requested by ousted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya.

Costa Rican Foreign Minister Bruno Stagno told the press that his government had decided to call off the diplomatic accreditation to Suazo.

Suazo is a member of the defacto Honduran government of Roberto Micheletti, who is not recognized as Honduran president by the Latin American nations.

Ousted Honduran Foreign Minister Patricia Rodas sent a letter to Costa Rican government requesting the disavowing of Suazo as Honduran ambassadress.

MANAGUA, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya appointed in exile a new ambassadress to Nicaragua, Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos said on Tuesday.

Santos told reporters that Zelaya's Foreign Minister Patricia Rodas appointed a new ambassadress in Managua according to instructions given by Zelaya, whose government was toppled in a June 28 coup.

Patricia Rodas was the first minister replaced by the interim leader Roberto Micheletti.

Santos did not tell the name of the new ambassadress, but said the Nicaraguan government will continue to support Zelaya and extend its solidarity.

"We are people who host their brothers in need of international support. We also respect the decisions of the United Nations and the Organization of American States, which only recognize Zelaya as constitutional president of Honduras," Santos added.

Honduras expels Argentine envoys

The interim government of Honduras has ordered all Argentine diplomats to leave the country within three days.

It said the move was in response to the expulsion of its ambassador last week by Buenos Aires, one of the strongest critics of June's military-backed coup.

The Honduran ambassador was told to go because of her public support for the overthrow of President Manuel Zelaya.

For the second time since 28 June, Mr Micheletti's government ordered the expulsion of foreign diplomats in a row over the ousting of Mr Zelaya.

Venezuela's envoys have also been told to leave but have so far refused, saying they will not recognise an order by the country's interim leadership.

The latest order came five days after Argentina expelled the Honduran ambassador, Carmen Eleonora Ortez Williams, at Mr Zelaya's request.

The Honduran foreign ministry said the decision was made on the basis of "strict reciprocity".

Diplomatic relations will now pass through the Israeli embassy.

Interim leaders in Honduras who backed the 28 June ouster of President Manuel Zelaya on Tuesday broke off diplomatic ties with Argentina, which has made a strong push to return the deposed leader.

The de facto leaders said they were breaking off relations on the basis of "strict reciprocity" after Argentina last week expelled the Honduran ambassador over her support for the military coup.

Diplomatic relations would now pass through the Israeli embassy in Argentina, they said in a statement.

Argentina's diplomatic chief responded in Mexico that his country's diplomats had no plans to leave their embassy in Honduras.

"Argentina's diplomatic staff is in Tegucigalpa and they don't have a (leaving) date at all," Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana said.

The interim Honduran leadership headed by Roberto Micheletti has already told Venezuela's envoys to leave, but they have refused.

Argentina last Thursday expelled the Honduran ambassador to Buenos Aires, Carmen Eleonora Ortez Williams, and President Cristina Kirchner has been among the staunchest defenders of Zelaya's right to return to power.
