Judi - You are a treasure trove of info
Thanks for providing the excerpt from NSA re: docs and Piero Gleissjeses.

The quote from the African leader who paid tribute to Cuban fighters, happens to be a qouote that appears at the bottom of my email and here it is:

"Cuban fighters are ready to lay down their lives for the liberation of our countries, and in exchange for this aid to our freedom and the progress of our people, all they take from us are their comrades who fell fighting for freedom." --Amilcar Cabral, freedom fighter, Guinea-Bissau, 1924-1973

1. Judi could give a graduate course on Latin American history
and politics. In fact, she is, right here. :)

3. You know, I went to look at the American Journal from this morning which you posted.

I could not make it even to the halfway point with the Colombian beastie, Ms. Barco. I think she is hideous, and sinister!

Loved the ambassador from Ecuador: Luis Gallego. Wasn't he excellent? He's far, far, FAR brighter, more refined, more subtle, more aware than the Colombian ambassador. He really spoke well for Ecuador, and it was hard to miss since he brought it up TWICE, Ecuador doesn't have the problems Colombia does, since it has gone much farther in trying to make a more peaceful country for its citizens, and to narrow the great gulf between the extreme wealthy and the extreme poor.

He brought it into the conversation so effortlessly, and naturally, and it was a point which shouldn't be overlooked. They have nothing to gain from collaborating with any group, as they are more advanced as a government, as a country, and they don't need that nonsense. HA HA HA HA.

He expertly handled all that mountain of twisted spin they've been hurling around for the last few days, in every instance. He exposed it all so skillfully. Very seasoned and accomplished man who knows how to conduct himself. What a guy!

Thank you for the chance to see him.

You have encouraged me to keep right in there. I don't know much, but I'm going to keep after it, you can be sure! Thank you.

What an accomplished man. He said his field is human rights and that he has just finished fashioning a human rights platform that will be the standard for international use -- I didn't catch where, though. It wasn't the UN but in any case, the difference between him and Condi Lite was so telling!

2. There's so much we have to find out as quickly as possible, wouldn't you say?
As you know, undoubtedly, American citizens have been kept TOTALLY ignorant of what our Presidents have been doing to the people in Latin America all this time. We just have been forced to bankroll them, while living in profound ignorance.

The frustration of not knowing nearly anything about what has been going on is so enormous it almost can paralyze you, especially when you can see the outline of what has become available through release of documents, and stories from citizens who somehow got the story out years after these events.

You can be sure what is written at DU by the serious people here is poured over and taken with us in our daily lives as we continue to think about these things. There is something so intense about the kinds of things we are learning now that it just doesn't seem there's time enough to take in what is needed to get a helpful overview.

Thanks for posting that statement by Amilcar Cabral. I'll bet it's very familiar to Cubans by now.

5. The north American audience has been condition to believe
news from Latin America is not important. This is useful in keeping one populace from identifying with and supporting another or others.

I've asked a mod to see if we can have our threads listed on "The Latest" page. Whatever happens with that, it gives me a lot of hope to see so much interest in Latin America here.
