Brazil’s Tourism Sector Booms
SALVADOR – The annual Travel-business study by the WTTC (World Travel and Tourism Council), an organization formed by the most important tourism entrepreneurs in the world, ranked Brazil thirteenth in the list of the biggest economies of the sector, holding the same position as last year.

The study brings to light the importance of tourism for the entire Brazilian GDP, along with its employment potential and the massive foreign income for the South American country.

Thanks to its 6,000 miles of beaches and strong governmental support programs, Brazil’s tourism sector did very well during the 2009 global economic crises, managing not to loose a point during the international recession.

The future – of the already most desired destination in South America – is bound to become even brighter. The 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games with their strong investments in infrastructure are already causing a great deal of international interest in Brazil.

1. I am more hopeful about the 2014 World Cup than the 2016 Games
Since the World Cup will expose different areas of the country to tourism and show to the world that there is more to Brazil than Rio and São Paulo. And this is coming from a Carioca. :-)

3. Nice!
Sou Carioca da gema.
Are you from there as well?

Last time I was in Rio was a couple of years ago. My wife is from Rio Grande do Sul so we go down to Porto Alegre more often than we visit Rio, unfortunately.

4. Oy, como vai ?

Did not know either you were a carioca.

I lived (while working for a U.S. company) in Rio but a long time ago (three decades). It was like a 2 1/2-year paid vacation !! Laranjeiras was my "barrio" (a tiny penthouse) and the office was on Avenida Rio Branco. It was a great time to be young and in Rio, despite the dictatorship.

Fond memories of Rio, Brazil and the garotas from Ipanema, Leblon and Copacabana :)

Oh, daughter a proud graduate of USP - Universidade de São Paulo.

5. Tudo bem, Rabs! E você?
My parents lived in Jardim Botânico when I was born and then we moved to Barra da Tijuca in the late 1970's when Barra was still a remote area. Barra is the heart of Rio nowadays. It is amazing how much it changed!

I also sort of lived in Copacabana with my grandparents (I slept there during the week) since it was closer to my school at the time. That was just before moving to the US in the late 1980's.

And yes, Rio is a great place for a young person! :-7

Your daughter being a graduate of USP makes you guys honorary Brazilians at the very least. :-)

Take care! :toast:

7. DC Metro
I'm in Gaithersburg.

All my American friends who went down to Rio with me ended up following in love with the city (the people, the music, the food, the humor, etc.). A couple of them ended up living there for a while.
