Chilean president's brother sentenced to community service

A Chilean judge on Monday sentenced President Sebastian Pinera's younger brother Miguel to community service and a fine for crashing his Hummer jeep into a Mini Cooper car while driving drunk, AFP reported.

Judge Jaime Fuica sentenced singer and businessman Miguel Pinera, 56, to pay a fine of more than 11,000 dollars and ordered him to serve 50 hours of community service in areas affected by the massive Feb. 27 earthquake.

He also had his driver's license revoked for one year.

On Oct. 3, while his older brother was still a presidential candidate, Miguel Pinera crashed his Hummer into a Mini Cooper owned by a woman named Maria Fernanda Koning, 24, according to the report.

Pinera insisted in a statement that he always acted in good faith, including at the scene of the accident, and that the results of his breathalyzer test.
