Seismic Activity in Guatemala Continues
Guatemala, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) Seismic activity continues in Guatemala without causing casualties or damages so far, while the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction and the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) are monitoring three volcanoes that have continuous activity.

Two earthquakes occurred on Tuesday; the first one in the northwestern department of Huehuetenango with a magnitude greater than 4.8 degrees on the Richter scale and the second with a magnitude of four degrees, in the northeastern department of Izabal.

According to INSIVUMEH, the source of the quake was located 140.1 km northeast of the capital and was felt in the neighboring territory of Zacapa.

In both cases the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction informs that there were no material or human damages.

Hopefully will all calm down. The last thing needed would be an excuse for her to poke her nose where its not welcome with vague promises of aid used as an excuse to get some US military in there.

1. Isn't THAT the truth? It worked so well in Haiti, didn't it?
Guatemala has had everything but the kitchen sink thrown at 'em in the recent past. My God.

Earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, mudslides, floods, and that nutso lawyer who paid some hitmen to murder him, and made that tape in advance to pin it on the President who had made him very angry when his law partner and his daughter (and the lawyer's mistress) had killed themselves. Almost kicked off a coup by the right-wing oligarchy who might have pulled if off if the police hadn't discovered the plot, and the players.

There should be a moratorium on earthquakes in Latin America. They need a chance to recuperate.

3. Brief report in English re Ecuador

Today a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit Ecuador, according to the U.s. Geological Survey. The quake had its center approximately 110 miles south east of Quito, Ecuador’s capital city. So far there have been few reports of injured people or damages in buildings, though we still have to wait for more information, since this has been a pretty strong earthquake.

According to the Associated Press, building damage was reported in Guayaquil and Manta, and one person has been officially reported as injured.

According to Ecuador’s national Geophysics Institute some areas of the country felt the Earth movement for 10 minutes!

Earth movement was felt also on the north region of Peru.

2. Biggie in Ecuador this dawn

6.9 or 7.1

Felt throughout Ecuador, from the Pacific to the eastern Andean jungle regions.

No initial reports of damage or victims. Reports say seismic movement very deep, almost 200 kilometers beneath the surface.
